See ya later, vino

Hey everyone! Happy Friday! Sorry I’m a little late posting today- it’s been my catch-up day since I worked a little more this past week.

I had to try one of the raw almond butter-stuffed macaroons when I walked downstairs this morning:

001

And it was every bit as evil and foodgasmic as it looks. Why didn’t I think of this sooner?!?

I took the little babies on a walk so they would be sane for the rest of the day.

005

Little goofballs:

002

And when we got home, I made a sludge before going to work.

006

It had coconut water, saturn peach, banana, hemp protein, Vega smoothie infusion, stevia, sea salt and vanilla. It was AMAZING!

I had a training appointment and a 30 minute elliptical sesh with my new book, and when I came home, Megan had left me Avocolada!

007

Yay-uhhhh! Meg is the smoothie/juice queen 😀

I had to go back to work, cleaned the casa and had a salad beast for lonchi:

008

Spinach, bell pepper, tomato, sweet onion, raw apple cider vinegar, sea salt, red chili flakes, 1/2 avocado and the last bit of goat gouda. And it was very gouda 😉

Back to work for two more appointments (why did I book so many on a Friday?! sheesh) and some more ellipticising and conversation with Jeni (20 minutes + 30 this morning =50 breezy minutes).

When I got back home to the puppers, I was hankering for an egg, so I had two egg whites topped with a generous amount of chili and some sea salt.

009

The pilot should be home any second and we’re meeting some friends for Indian tonight! Twice in a week- I’m ecstatic.

It pains me to say this but I think I’m going to cut back on the red vino. Every single time I’ve had vino for the past month or so (even when it’s just one glass, like last night) I’ve had horrific nightmares. Scary, horrible nightmares – I woke up twice last night. Has anyone heard of this happening before?? So for now, I’m not going to drink vino.. we’ll see how long I last though 😉

I’m off to get a little yoga in my life for these tight hammies and then get ready for Indian!

Enjoy the rest of your day!

xoxo,

G

Today’s tip: This is for my readers who would like to gain some el bees. An easy way to add in extra calories and gain weight at a healthy pace is to add a smoothie to your current food intake. This way, you can drink your calories (rather than having to eat an extra meal), add in as much or as little as you need, and then reduce the amount once you get into maintenance mode. If drinking the smoothie at once is too much for you, just leave it in the fridge and sip on it throughout the day. Another tip- just blend it until combined (not for much longer) so that excess air doesn’t get in there- it will keep you from getting that “too full/bloated” feeling.

Reminder: Please email your Summer Shape Up success stories by tomorrow at midnight 😀

  4. Jewels on July 24, 2009 at 5:39 pm

if i drink wine and fall asleep soon after, i have weird dreams. If I keep myself up for a couple of hours, I'm usually good to go Its hard though when your busy because wine makes you super sleepy

  5. jenngirl on July 24, 2009 at 5:56 pm

That's so strange about the vino (and sad!)…I know that my mom has a thing about the sulfites in wine, but they just give her major headaches…hope you have fun tonight anywho! 😉

  6. Stacy on July 24, 2009 at 6:03 pm

oh how sad, no more vino?!?! Also, just looking at that almond butter stuff macaroon is making me drool all over my keyboard.

Sweet pups and gorgeous macaroon. I'm hungry for dinner right now…and that picture did not help! 🙂

Christian Dior has trouble drinking red wine at night as well. Doesn't give him nightmares, but he always wakes up in the middle of the night, and can't get back to sleep.

Have fun tonight – Indian food…yum!

Thanks for the tip about gaining! I need to gain back about 5lbs, but want to put it on in muscle, and gain it back slowly and healthfully! That macaroon looks aaaaaaaaamazing!

  18. carolinebee on July 24, 2009 at 9:59 pm

I get nightmares from eating dairy too soon before bed, haha weird i know but I can relate and it's soo creepy and not cool! Definitely not worth the vino 😀

Your workout marathons and smoothies all sound soo bomb- your posts make me so happy!! And puppy pics of course!

Have a great weekend and enjoy the yoga and indian food!!

  21. Alison on July 24, 2009 at 10:46 pm

I get nightmares and don't sleep well when I drink alcohol (in particular wine.) I went digging in some of my nursing books and found out: alcohol interferes with your sleep cycle so you never get to REM and spend too much time in the stages of sleep that aren't restful – you're brain doesn't shut down so you dream! It slows responses and often induces sleep quickly but because of it's effects on the sleep cycle – leads to unrestful (is that a word) sleep!
P.S. I haven't tried Indian food EVER but because you blog about loving it so much I'm getting a group of girls to go try it with me this week!

  22. Sarah (LovIN My Tummy) on July 25, 2009 at 12:00 am

I've actually found since going high raw that even the slightest bit of the hooch doesn't sit well with me. Now if they could just put green juice in a bottle and cork it, I'd be happy.

  23. buffmuffy on July 25, 2009 at 12:12 am

gain weight? oh my… i would never. LOL.
anyway, that is so weird about the nightmares!

    Hi Gina,
I'm in school right now for Oriental Medicine and I have heard something about the effects of different foods (such as wine 🙂 ) having effects on individuals of certain types (for example, I'm an 'earth' type)–it has to do with the elements and the body's balance and what not and it's different foods/reactions for different people. I would recommend if you know of any acupuncturists or TCM practicioners in the area you could give them a visit and talk to them about it. You can email me if you have any questions and I'll tell you what I do know, but in the mean time I'm glad you recognize the correlation between the wine and the nightmares–awareness is such a huge part of health.

  25. wholebodylove on July 25, 2009 at 2:50 am

Love the gaining tip! That's a great way to NOT feel deprived once one switches to maintenance mode!

  26. dirtyduck on July 25, 2009 at 3:47 am

sooo i actually signed up for a blog…to NOT feel like a "lurker" but… i just feel like more of one since i copied your pink background……i have been lurking around choosing raw for awhile now and then saw yours, you are so funny and i am so motivated. but that quickly turns to exhaustion when i read about how much you do in a day!! give the little stinkies a hug n kiss for me! g'night im headed towards choosing raw to leave a comment, i owe you both so much already!

  27. Pam on July 25, 2009 at 7:41 am

Hope your finding the nightmares have passed!

Awh, your dogs are way too cute!

  30. MarathonVal on July 25, 2009 at 11:43 am

No nightmares, but after day drinking (wine) at the Cubs game yesterday I definitely had some bad WEIRD dreams last night, even though a few hours had passed… weird!

  31. lilveggiepatch on July 25, 2009 at 12:32 pm

Those macaroons are KILLER, holy moly! I'm having some pretty serious cravings for those now.

I don't know if I've had nightmares from wine specifically, but my sleep is a lot worse when I've had alcohol and that's usually when I have the scary dreams.

Hope you had a fab Indian feast!

  32. Menden @ Skinny Menny on July 25, 2009 at 12:56 pm

That's a shame about the wine…(I too love a good glass of vino!), but it would make sense, I guess, that if it's disturbing your sleep, it may lead to you getting nightmares.

    Have a great weekend!

  33. Kelli on July 25, 2009 at 2:58 pm

I am fairly new to your blog, I love your energy!
About the vino, you can get the health benefits of wine without drinking alcohol. You probably know that though.
Are you going to post a recipe for those almond butter macaroons? I need that recipe!
You make me want to buy a juicer too!
Do you make up the recipes you make in the crock pot, or do you have a go-to book? You seem like you have a nack for good recipes.
Can you send me a link to a post, if there is one, with a sound eating plan? I know you lost with South Beach, but what would you do today to lose weight with all of the information you have gained?
    Have a great day!

  34. Danielle on July 25, 2009 at 3:04 pm

Oh my gosh you poor thing! That's definitely a good reason to hold of on the vino. Hope you had a great wine-free dinner though 🙂

  35. Cait (Cait's Plate) on July 25, 2009 at 4:30 pm

WHAT! Raw almond butter stuffed macaroons!? That's like heaven in a bite-sized piece right there!

  36. Kelli on July 25, 2009 at 4:35 pm

I thought of 2 more questions while I have your ear.
Have you found a good cheap on-line source for Vega smoothie infusion and Survival bars? I live in a small town also, mine does not have a Whole Foods or a juice bar, well, we have a juice bar but it is one of those put frozen yogurt into everything, I want a healthy juice bar!
    Thanks!

  37. Fitnessista on July 25, 2009 at 4:56 pm

beth- they do now, but we've had a few incidents in the past where viesa tried to eat bella :/

eredblue- thank you so much for the info!

dirtyduck- thanks for saying hi! so cool you started your own blog and i *guess* it's ok you're using the pink background 😉 hope to see you around more often!

kelli- i can't post a recipe for the macaroons, because i've come up with it after a lot of trial and error and am in the process of making them available online in the near future 😉 the vega goodies you can get online as well as the survival bars- they're both amazing! as far as weight loss goes, i still recommend a mediterranean-style diet to most of my clients. if you check out my first summer shape up post (it's called holy bikini body) there's a sample eating plan there, which i hope will start you off on the right foot. please send me an email if you need anything 😀

  38. Erin of Care to Eat on July 26, 2009 at 1:56 am

WOW! I'm so sorry you're having crazy dreams! Ugh! I have to say, I haven't drank in years and I don't miss it at all! I guess I was never than into it.
Those AB stuffed macaroons look freakin' dope. I would def buy 'em if you sold 'em…hint hint 🙂
    Have a gorgeous week Gina!

  39. Amy L on July 27, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Is there a way to get the entire plan on one long page or pages in order?

I REALLY need to do this.

Also is it possible with a few substitutions to do this without a gym?

  40. tlh2566 on July 27, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Hey Gina, I read a lot but rarely comment. I have the same problem with wine – my sleep has been miserable lately. I've decided to give it up for a while too and see what happens. Good luck
