So Fly Fried Rice

Try saying that 10 times fast 😉

Hey guys! How’s your morning going?? Hope it’s off to a great start 🙂

Last night, I couldn’t get my mind off fried rice.

So healthified fried rice it was 😀

fried rice (3)

It was so fly 😉

All I did was add some cooked brown rice –cooked earlier in the day so it was ready to go when I got home from Zumba- to 1/2 package Whole Foods stir fry mix in the skillet.

After everything was heated through, I cleared the way for an egg, cracked in an egg from the farm and scrambled it all together.

Seasoned with nama shoyu, rice vinegar, a lil EVOO, and red chili flakes.

I spent the evening watching Dancing with the Stars and wearing my Moji Knee.

I can’t believe that I haven’t told ya’ll about the Moji Knee yet. The company sent it to me after I hurt my knee during the half marathon, and I’ve used it quite a bit in the past few weeks. You can read my full review *here*. My knee feels a thousand times better, but I’m still icing it regularly to keep it safe 🙂

This morning, Ashley came over for our AM Insanity workout.

It was… well, insane. In a good way though! Today we did cardio plyometrics and it was a killer workout. The awesome thing is that it proves that quality trumps quantity. In a little over 40 minutes, I got a wayyyy better workout than I would have gotten dilly dallying on the elliptical.

I made Ash a chocolate cherry bomb, and had a little “taster” 😀

I’m off to SHOWER, run errands, then walk the puppers before heading to work. See ya this afternoon with that reader’s request post 😀

Something to talk about: After my jaunt to Orlando and recent pool time, my hair has gotten SO much lighter. I’m thinking about dyeing it this week…. I haven’t colored my hair in over a year, but usually like to when it gets brassy (it’s usually a chocolate brown color). Do you color your hair or leave it natural? I will never forget when we dyed my friend Becca’s hair in high school… she had brown hair and wanted to go blond, so we bought blond hair color and dyed it during a sleepover. My mom is a stylist, so I have no clue how I forgot this crucial step, but you have to bleach the hair before taking it to a lighter color. We just put the blond hair dye on her, and the only part that took the color was the roots of her hair. It looked like she was wearing a bald cap with hair sticking out of it. Disaster!! She got it fixed the next day, but we all felt horrible. I’m always extra careful when I dye my hair at home now…

I didn’t color my hair until I was about 22! I just got some blond highlights because I actually have really dark brown hair. I like it, but sometimes wish I had never touched it. Luckily, it’s never looked dry or anything. I never do it on my own though – I always have my stylist do it!

That fried rice looks like the bomb!! 🙂

  3. Mara @ What's For Dinner? on April 13, 2010 at 9:51 am

Your post title made me laugh 🙂 I think I told you, once I found a fly in fried rice at a restaurant, and we called it Flied Rice! HA!

I’ve been dying my hair in one way or another since I was 13. Right now, I’m close to my natural color, but because it was sooo bleached out from my blondeness, the brown isn’t staying. I need to go get it done soon!

  4. BethT on April 13, 2010 at 9:51 am

Sadly, I’m a former natural blonde whose hair color migrated to a dishwater ashy color. Highlights are my only option unless I want to look like a really drab old lady.

  5. Elle @ Acquired Tastes on April 13, 2010 at 9:52 am

I’ve never dyed my hair on my own, but I’ve been highlighting it since high school, so now it’s nothing like my natural color. I just like being a blond better 🙂

Your natural hair color is gorgeous!

  6. Diana on April 13, 2010 at 9:52 am

I’ve dyed my hair several times. Red, purple-ish, black, brown. My hair is brown and I have some natural red highlights which I love so now I just leave it with its natural color(s) all the time. 🙂

  7. Allie (Live Laugh Eat) on April 13, 2010 at 9:53 am

The egg is crucial in fried rice and I bet that farm fresh egg was outta this WORLD. I say die your hair if you are gonna look in the mirror and dislike the brassiness you see. It would be simple and easy from a box, so why not?

  8. Teri [a foodie stays fit] on April 13, 2010 at 9:53 am

You crack me up: “Matching socks are for suckas.” hahahaha.

I first got highlights when I was 12 or something. I know…what the?? And the longest I’ve gone since then without coloring is 6 months, which was last year when I wanted to see what my natural color was. I’ve had every color and cut imaginable. I even have a page on my blog about my hair. haha! Apparently, I crave change. I’m approaching another record though; I’ve had the same cut and color for almost 6 months now!

  9. Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on April 13, 2010 at 10:00 am

    1) That “fried” rice looks aaamazing. What is nama shoyu? And where do you find it??

    2) My socks NEVER match. Only they’re much more obvious (ex: neon green and purple)

    3) Go for it (the hair)! It’s summer so why not?? Maybe try some more natural “sun kissed” foils rather than an all over color..

Can’t wait to see which you choose 🙂

  10. Lauren on April 13, 2010 at 10:00 am

I say go au natural! I haven’t dyed my hair in almost 7 years and I constantly get comments about how healthy it looks and how it looks like I have highlights and they are all just natural from the sun. You keep the bo natural, why not your skin and hair??

    • Lauren on April 13, 2010 at 10:00 am

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2010 at 10:15 am

that’s a good point, and that’s what i was trying to do.. but my hair is starting to look a little funny, haha

  11. Jenny on April 13, 2010 at 10:00 am

I used to color my hair, but it grows out so fast it’s hard to keep up with- and i don’t really have the moolah to keep up with it! Wish I could, though but I’ll have to rely on the beach for highlights:)

  12. Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin on April 13, 2010 at 10:00 am

My hair is au naturale. I had a really bad highlight job when I was in 8th grade… think thick striped platinum highlights in my very dark brown hair.. and it scared me for life.

  13. Meg on April 13, 2010 at 10:02 am

I’m afraid to color my hair 🙁 maybe one day, haha. That fried rice looks awesome, and your post, as always, made me laugh 😀

    Meg

p.s. matching socks are totally for suckas. I agree.

  14. Shelly on April 13, 2010 at 10:05 am

When I had my natural(ish) brown hair, I would dye it a darker brown at home when I thought it needed a boost (I had a pool and spent a lot of time in the sun playing tennis and swimming- so I understand the fading issue), but now that my hair is dyed blond- and I make sure a professional does it!
And on a side note, I had a crazy dream last night that I was getting my hair done by a new lady and I told her I thought my current color was a little too dark and brassy. She said she’d fix it, and then when she was done, she’d given me a pixie cut and the color of my hair was black and orange!! So awful! Haha!

  15. Britt @ Runnerbelle on April 13, 2010 at 10:06 am

So true on quality over quantity! I had a killer crossfit/kettlebell workout last night, only lasted about 25 minutes but I was toast by the end. Also a wee bit sore today too.

I highlight my hair. It is mainly encouraging what the sun already does… at least I think so.

  16. Morgan @ Healthy Happy Place on April 13, 2010 at 10:06 am

I’ve never dyed my hair. I love my natural color, it’s a reddish, brownish blondish shade.

I always wear mismatched socks too!

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2010 at 10:14 am

haha once i wash them, all bets are off 🙂

  17. Paige (Running Around Normal) on April 13, 2010 at 10:11 am

Mmm fried rice. Makes me want some! Perhaps that will be tonight’s dinner.
I’ve been coloring my hair since I was 16. However, I might quit and go au naturel soon – for $$$ reasons. It’s so expensive!

  18. Nicole @ Making Good Choices on April 13, 2010 at 10:19 am

I color my hair when it gets too light because I’m usually a dark bruntette until summer time. I hate when I get too brassy! I laughed out loud at that story about coloring your friends hair! She must have been mortified! 🙂

  19. Amy on April 13, 2010 at 10:22 am

Could you consider doing a more detailed review of the “INSANITY” workout? I have seen it on info-mmercials and it looks awesome but the $$ is also pretty hefty. Just wanted a trusted opinion before investing!

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2010 at 10:23 am

of course- i’m going to do a full review when it’s over. in the meantime, i’m just gonna give some thoughts on it each day 🙂

  20. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on April 13, 2010 at 10:27 am

    Hi Gina!
I just came across your blog the other day and I LOVE it! You (and a few other ladies) have actually inspired me to start my own and I’ve added you to my blogroll! Like Amy (above) I’d love to hear a review of the Insanity workout too – it’s been on the TVs at my gym all the time recently and I’m curious to hear what you think!
Oh, and about hair! I colour my own and I’ve never had anything too disastrous happen. I’m a brunette (naturally a medium-dark brown) but I’ve been thinking about going a little lighter again for summer. I get bored quite easily so I think I might do it in the next couple of weeks!

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2010 at 10:50 am

hey angela! welcome to the bloggy- that’s wonderful that you started your own!
i’ll definitely post a full review when the program is over 🙂 love it so far though

  21. Stephanie on April 13, 2010 at 10:30 am

that “fried” rice looks amazing!! I’ve thought about dyeing my hair in the summer (my hair is about the same color as yours) and I hate when it gets lighter in the summer…but I’ve never ever dyed it so I’m scared to do it:)

  22. Lauren @ Eater not a runner on April 13, 2010 at 10:33 am

I used to highlight my hair but it was just too expensive to keep up! Now I’m going au natural!

  23. Lisa on April 13, 2010 at 10:37 am

Well, I used to dye my hair a variety of colours…I’ve had blonde, black, red, light brown, ORANGE (and not the nice kind), and many other hair colours.

Butttt, I went travelling for four months and didn’t want to have to worry about roots coming in, so I dyed it a shade closer to my natural (light brown) and haven’t dyed my hair since. I think it’s been one year.

I really prefer having my natural hair colour. I am finding that I have all these neat streaks of light blonde that I never knew I had before! Um, I also have some greys, which is not as nice, but they blend in with the blonde, soo…

  24. Heather (Heather's Dish) on April 13, 2010 at 10:37 am

girl, i don’t remember what my natural hair color is…some sort of light brown i think? it’s been blonde for so long now though!

  25. brittany on April 13, 2010 at 10:39 am

wow I love seeing healthified recipes!!
I get full highlights every three months in my hair. I usually get darker ones during winter and lighter during the summer.

  26. Abby on April 13, 2010 at 10:43 am

That is such a frightening story!! I’ve died my hair about twice. It was alright, but my natural hair is brown with natural red highlights, so I like to keep it natural!

  27. Melissa S. on April 13, 2010 at 10:44 am

hahaha…i’m all about natural color cause well, not to sounds selfish but my natural highlights rock!

i have had parts of my hair bleached and dyed in the past though…and it was purple, green, blue and pink…pretty awesome!

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2010 at 10:49 am

      that is awesome!!

  28. Jessica @ The Process of Healing on April 13, 2010 at 10:49 am

Eeek, I’ve heard about Insanity but of course just the name intimidates me! Would love to hear your review, though. I’m well acquainted with Shaun T via Hip Hop Abs, though. He’s good fun. 🙂

I should probably consider a little color for my ‘do too–lotsa gray happening up in here! Barf.

  32. Kelly on April 13, 2010 at 11:04 am

I used to highlight my hair super blond, and now I like it my dark brown color. but I usually have to dye it once or twice a year to keep the highlights that are growing in from showign through.

  33. Kristie S on April 13, 2010 at 11:04 am

Of course I color my hair, too much gray. Always take care of yourself no matter how old you are.

  34. Melissa (MelissaLikesToEat) on April 13, 2010 at 11:05 am

I’ve been colorin my hair since I was 18 I think. Mostly just highlights but I do color my entire head of hair every now and then.

The Plyometrics video from P90X was killer….I can only imagine “Cardio Plyometrics”….I’m sweating just thinking of it! 😉

  35. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on April 13, 2010 at 11:24 am

I have been dying my hair ever since I was 13 and wanted to go blond. I looked absolutely awful and a few years later changed it back to my dark brown hair color, just in a richer color. My hair has a lot of red undertones and after being exposed to the sun it will turn red! That’s when I color it again 😉

  36. Nicci@NiftyEats on April 13, 2010 at 11:25 am

I always like to try something different during the summer time, add a bit of color.

  37. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on April 13, 2010 at 11:27 am

That fried rice looks awesome. And it seemed so easy. As for my hair, I’ve been getting highlights since I was in eighth grade and I’ve been going to the same woman–even though I now live in VA and she’s in MA by my parents. The things we do for vanity. That reminds me that I need to get my hair highlighted. It’s been a year and a half since I stopped to save money.

  38. Mary on April 13, 2010 at 11:35 am

Been dying forever. Early gray. Ask your mom about ‘deposit only’, water-activated color like Robert Craig and Water Works. Supposedly it doesn’t strip color, just adds it so there’s no fading to brassiness. I’ve been using it for a while and it does seem better, and feels healthier without the gloppy, smelly gunk, and it’s easier to handle. I have very dark brown hair like yours so brassiness is a problem. Sally Beauty Supply sells Water Works and one other ‘deposit only’ color brand. It’s permanent, like the other stuff.

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2010 at 11:48 am

good to know- i’ll ask her about it today! thank you! 🙂

i dyed my hair wayyy too much in high school (i was red, platinum AND chocolate!) so i’ve gotten to the point where i’m okay with my natural blonde hair.

and hahah “matching socks are for suckas”. i remember when i was in elementary school the cool thing to do was to wear two different colored socks 🙂

  40. Therese on April 13, 2010 at 11:52 am

    Yum on the fried rice!!!

I normally don’t colour my hair but a few years back I went with blonde highlights which actually went really well with my red hair but it really dried my hair out. Perhaps with my better hair care and awesome products it wouldn’t dry out so much!

  41. Lily @ Lily's Health Pad on April 13, 2010 at 11:55 am

I want to try Insanity so badly! My sister has it, and she said she didn’t like it because the moves go by very quickly with little instruction on how to properly do them. She was afraid of getting injured. I’d still like to give it a try though!

  42. Carly @ The Road To Health on April 13, 2010 at 11:57 am

Mmmm that stir fry looks great! 🙂
I like to keep my hair au naturel. I have died it in the past, but ended up going natural. I always end up appreciating my true colour when I think about dying again.

  43. Emily on April 13, 2010 at 12:26 pm

That rice looks SO good. Lately, I’ve been craving rice. On sunday I made cardamom rice….then added salsa and tahina. So yummy. Rice, the other white meat?

  44. rachael on April 13, 2010 at 12:32 pm

I tried to go strawberry blonde in high school and ended up looking like rainbow brite. I stay far away from do-it-yourself dyes now!

  45. Mama Pea on April 13, 2010 at 12:33 pm

My hair is back to it’s natural color now after years of dyeing. I’m trying not to sweat the few grays that are popping up. I would definitely go to a salon or use a semi permanent at home!

  46. Kilee on April 13, 2010 at 12:35 pm

Glad to hear that you are liking the knee brace! I believe that if we assist injuries with recovery aids, it helps the natural healing of our bodies. I have highlighted my hair since a at-home disaster at the age of 12. I feel so much better when I look in the mirror and the nasty roots are gone. Have a great day!

  47. Catherine on April 13, 2010 at 12:40 pm

I used to get highlights in my hair during high school, but it just became so much of a hassle I finally stopped. My wallet thanked me in the end!

Damn, I want a moji knee. Too bad it’s so expensive!!!

I started coloring my hair with highlights in college. I decided to go red and totally screwed the color and have been dark red/brown ever since. I love the darker hair better than my light brown w/highlights.

  49. Nicole, RD on April 13, 2010 at 12:58 pm

I didn’t color my hair until recently and I’m 24. I don’t know why I started…just wanted change. I just highlight some, and I don’t think I’ll ever go back. It’s fun “me” time 🙂

I love the “matching socks are for suckas!” LOL!

  50. Jean on April 13, 2010 at 2:01 pm

I was always afraid to color my hair when I was younger. My mom always used to say “if God wanted you to have a different color of hair, He would’ve given it to you!” (And I think she told me this before she started coloring her own…gotta love moms!) The turning point was when the gray started coming in. The color is so close to my own color that most people don’t notice, and I can go WAY beyond 6-8 weeks w/o roots showing – just the gray growing out shows at that point. 🙂
