10 Ways to Make August Awesome

1. Have something to look forward to (for me: Healthy Living Summit! So soon!)- write it down.

2. Create a goal for the month. Going to practice yoga “x” amount of times in August? Make a check-off list and keep track! Also, it’s kind of fun and empowering to check things off a list 🙂

3. Plan a dinner party. Even if you’re never done it before (or haven’t in a year!! yikers – moving all over the place can put a damper on your social life, fo sho), go for it. Plan a simple menu, invite some friends over and you’ll be so glad you did 🙂 We’re in the midst of planning a legendary housewarming party 😉

4. Go through your summer clothes and determine which ones you’d like to get rid of before storing the rest for fall and winter. It will make the job of storing your clothes much easier when fall is actually here, and also give you some time to donate or sell via consignment. Whatever you sell, you can use the money for new cold-weather clothes! Or save it. 😉

5. Go for a swim! It’s nice to swim (or float on a raft, in my case) when it’s still nice out- take advantage 🙂

6. Pick up a new cookbook to try this month, or borrow one from a friend. It’s an easy way to refresh your eats and try out new methods or ingredients.

7. Sign up for a fitness event with a friend. Right now is a great time to start training for longer spring races (like the Disney Princess Half Marathon!), so it’s a great way to prepare for the event while staying motivated over the holiday season.

8. Scope out some new jeans for fall. Nothing says autumn like a pair of dark, crispy, new denim <3

9. Go out for a girls night 😀 Movies, dinner/cocktails, Sex and the City marathon, whatever. Girls nights are great for the soul… plus the Pilot is a good sport, but some things he just doesn’t understand.

10. Eat a pizookie. Every time I post a pic of one, my mind is always blown by the amount of people who say they’ve never had a pizookie.

All ya do is:

-Press your favorite cookie dough into the bottom of a deep dish pizza pan or tart pan (I almost always use *this dough*)

-Bake *almost* all the way, so it’s still gooey inside

-Top with ice cream of choice and chocolate chips

-Yell: Pizookie! Pizookie! PIZOOOOOOOOOKIE!

-And eat it, while enjoying the best foodgasm life has to offer 😉

What a great list! August is going to be an awesome month.

I wish I could put going to the HLS on my list – I am so sad I can’t make it. Oh, well – there is always next year!

  11. Molly on August 1, 2011 at 10:13 am

i love your ideas of August. Especially swimming! girls nights! fitness! Dinner parties! AND NEW JEANS! Why is finding the perfect pair of jeans so much fun? And why can I never have enough jeans?

  12. Katie on August 1, 2011 at 10:13 am

Awesome post and it was EXACTLY what I need this morning. This year has been a whirlwind for my family, and I have to stay strong for them which means that I’m going to practice yoga daily (either Bikram or Ashtanga because they are the only two that CALM me down the most), going on a beach vaca with my boyfriend in three weeks – going to relax and float in the ocean, currently have a trunk full of old clothes waiting to be donated to Goodwill, and I have a really good book to read that will take most of the month and most of my spare time (Unbroken… read the preface and I already know I won’t put it down).

Hope your month is beautiful! 🙂

  13. Morgan @ Some Kind of Sunshine on August 1, 2011 at 10:18 am

I love this idea of Awesome August. I think I’m going to blog about my own list for August. Yours looks like fun!!! Have a great Monday Funday!

  14. diane on August 1, 2011 at 10:20 am

Yesterday I made up my “To do this week” plan, including a meal plan (I love a new, clean week, full of opportunities and possibilities…), so now I’m excited to make my August plans! I’ve got a new planner coming this week…these simple things really excite me…I’m such a nerd! PS> I feel like I know you better now, you showed up in my dream last night as one of my friends! You were so sweet and you lived in a town in Montana that had more animals (cows, horses, etc.) than people! Too funny! (BTW I live in a town like that in Wyoming) Thanks for the fun ideas. Have a great day, hope your work session went well last night…eager to hear what you’ve been working on!

  15. Laura @ Backstage Pass on August 1, 2011 at 10:20 am

Great post, Gina! I especially love #10: Eat a Pizookie 🙂

  16. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on August 1, 2011 at 10:23 am

I am one of the very naive few that hasn’t tried the Pizookie yet but maybe I’ll take you up on your suggestion and make one this month! To make my August awesome, I’ll be celebrating my birthday, attending a fitness conference (sadly not HLS but one that is still great!) enjoying the outdoors, and shaking up my fitness routine. 🙂

  17. Shayla @ The Good Life on August 1, 2011 at 10:26 am

Love this list! And can you believe I’m also one of those who has never tried a pizookie before?! And I live 10 minutes from BJ’s! I must make that happen, stat…and I definitely now want to make yours, looks delish!

I want to make August awesome by hubby and I finally getting pregnant…I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself but at the same time I can’t help it! 🙂

  18. Avery on August 1, 2011 at 10:26 am

I’ve tried wax candles before too! I have terrible hearing so for fun one day my mom and I picked some up. We were so amazed by how much “wax” the candle was drawing out of our ears, so after we used a couple we cut one open before we used it.. only to find that it had fake wax inside!!! They tricked us 🙁

I don’t know if those are the same kind of candles, but beware of false advertising!

  19. Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing on August 1, 2011 at 10:27 am

Mmm, I was just thinking I should make my GF almond flour pizookie this week! You’ve convinced me this was a good idea 😉

  20. Kilee on August 1, 2011 at 10:28 am

I LOVED this post! I am going to make August awesome. I’m leaving for a trip that I’ve been planning for quite some time now, training for a race, being a bridesmaid in on of my best friend’s wedding & it’s my birthday at the end of the month. Oh, and I already bought a new pair of Mother jeans. Try them out. They are to die for!

    Have a great Monday!!!

August has been a much anticipated month for several months now. I separate from the Air Force and start a new chapter in my life! I’m so excited to start working on some of my goals (improving my photography skills) while during my indefinite period of unemployment.

    • Fitnessista on August 1, 2011 at 5:10 pm

congrats! thank you so much for protecting our country <3

  23. Jen G. on August 1, 2011 at 10:38 am

My aunt makes pizookies, but we call them “big cookie.” Mostly because instead of making them in that itty-bitty pie pan, we make them in a giant cast iron skillet and make the consumption a communal experience. (We all attack big cookie straight from the skillet. Spoons fly everywhere, and it’s a bit dangerous, actually.)

  24. Aine @ Something to Chew Over on August 1, 2011 at 10:40 am

Obviously I’m going to make a pizookie 🙂

  25. fittingbackin on August 1, 2011 at 10:53 am

great, motivating post! I still can’t believe it’s August! I’m finalizing my goals today – my favorite part of a new month!

  26. Rachel @ Eat, Learn, Discover! on August 1, 2011 at 10:57 am

Thanks for such a motivating post! I originally wasn’t going to post goals or anything, but now I think I will, since july was just a mess of ups and downs. Striving for balance, that’s what august will be about!

  27. Holly @ The Runny Egg on August 1, 2011 at 10:57 am

I definitely need a pizookie in my life!

  28. emily on August 1, 2011 at 11:00 am

Summer’s only just starting in London, don’t make me think of Fall!!! :))))
I will however take you up on the suggestion of a cookbook switch, that is a fine idea… gracias!

  29. Rachel on August 1, 2011 at 11:00 am

I have never heard of a pizookie, but I pretty sure the next time I have occasion for a dessert it will be one! Looks super yummy.
I love doing these monthly lists – I’m actually working on my August goals right now.

Great tips, Gina! I am looking forward to a nice family vacation at the end of August. I can’t wait! 😀

  32. Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather on August 1, 2011 at 11:05 am

A pizzookie would make august awesome! I’m enjoy my 3 year anniversary today, teaching workout classe and enjoying the sun! It doesn’t take much to make summer awesome 🙂

  33. Emilie on August 1, 2011 at 11:08 am

You have made me excited for August! That hummus did the job, too. 😉

  34. Lisa on August 1, 2011 at 11:09 am

I never follow advice like this—I read it and then think, “what a good idea…” …and then I move on and forget about it. But I did just write out my list of 10 for August, adjusting only the things that don’t really fit for me from your list (like swimming—I’m a rock).

The pizookie looks slightly dangerous for me….but I’m all about livin on the edge 🙂
    Have a fab day!

  35. Lauren on August 1, 2011 at 11:10 am

Gah, can’t believe its August already!! Love the pizookie-want to mail me one? 😉

  36. Gina @ Running to the Kitchen on August 1, 2011 at 11:12 am

  37. Girl In the pink on August 1, 2011 at 11:17 am

Great tips!! I’m considering signing up for a 1/2 marathon on august 28th!!!

  38. Julie (A Case of the Runs) on August 1, 2011 at 11:30 am

Great list! I typically find August so drab due to hot hot weather and no fun holidays.

What would really make my August is a change in my job situation right now… it’s starting to really depress me.

  39. kara on August 1, 2011 at 11:33 am

“Yell: Pizookie! Pizookie! PIZOOOOOOOOOKIE!” ahahah my favorite part!

SO.. august is my birthday month! i’ll be 25!! i also have two beach weekends planned with family AND i’m gonna have a bbq with friends for my bday… the weekend before i move out of my house and into nyc! i’m gonna be just blocks away from one lucky duck… are you jealous???

  45. Alana on August 1, 2011 at 12:16 pm

  46. Jeana on August 1, 2011 at 12:21 pm

Wow! I can’t believe it is only August. (I say only because I get to finally see my hubs at the end of September- military wifey here)

Awesome way to prioritize and look on the up and up!

  47. Cat @Breakfast to Bed on August 1, 2011 at 12:24 pm

I am in love with Jacques Torres chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches here in Bklyn, I think this fits for the pizookie goal!!

August is my birthdayyyy month (in 4 days!) so it’s already awesome as it is 🙂 And I’m also traveling to Finland and Sweden at the end of the month. Other than that, August shall be awesome because I will
    1) Continue my new fitness routine
    2) Get rid of all unnecessary clutter (already have hauled out 4 bags of old clothes)
    3) Start writing for an online magazine 🙂
