Tinsel Hair
As much as I love all holiday decorations and wintery things (SNOWMEN!), thereโs one thatโs not really my fave:ย Source
tinsel.
Itโs made a comeback in the holiday decorating world over the past few years, but I canโt help but think of how hard it would be to clean up (especially with an artificial tree) and imagining what Bella would look like covered in it -she likes to chase her toys in the tree vicinity.
Even so, I let the madre put a strand of shiny tinsel-esque satin in my hair after cutting it today. She said that itโs been really popular with the holidays and a lot of people have been requesting blinged-out hair.
See it?
Just a fun little sparkle.
Friday is usually a big errand day over here since I teach all day on Saturdays, so I scurried around town, had a midwife appointment, and stopped at Whole Foods for my post-midwife appointment treat: usually a green juice and/or hot bar. I grabbed some sniffle supplies, including a large green juice, Emergen-C and some harvest squash soup.
Worth sharing?
Yes, because you might not be able to finish this one by yourself- it was kinda gross, which says a lot because Iโve never had an icky Whole Foods soup experience until today. Just another nudge to make my own using your lovely recipe suggestions.
First on the list (from the comments section):
Robinโs FAVORITE Soup Recipe:
1 onion
1 garlic clove
2 T olive oil
2 28oz cans of stewed tomatoes
4 c of vegetable stock
1 can of garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed
bunch of fresh green beans
carrots- cut longwise and in half (I use baby carrots)
1 sweet potato
( you can also get creative and add other veggies, Iโve done squash, zucchini and even cabbage)
Chili powder, salt and pepper to tasteStart with the olive oil in a large pot over medium high. Add and brown the onion, add the garlic. Cook for 2-5 minutes (desired texture), add the tomatoes and vegetable stock. Add the rest of the vegetables, bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat to medium low. Cook for 45 minutes. Serve and enjoy
We top with sour cream. : )
I canโt wait to try it!
The Pilot picked up some food from Sauce on the way home,
(he was having a pasta and panino hankering)
and I joined him with a salad beast.
Including my favorite green:
+ heated up organic turkey, goat cheese, tomatoes, Goddess dressing, 1/2 avocado, and croutons made out of chopped up toast.
We watched some of this guy
(so dapper in his suits, and HILARIOUS)
and are about to go on a little coffee date.
See ya in the morning!
xoxo

Something to talk about: Whatโs the most adventurous thing youโve ever done with your hair? Since madre is a stylist, Iโve had quite a few hair phases- I was red for a while, almost platinum blond for a couple of years โwhich was rough since my hair is naturally so dark- and short hair that was angled longer in the front.
Dee duh dee. Why haven’t I done that already? I am literally the QUEEN of all things sparkly. Happening.
You know your tastebuds might be a bit whack at the moment? Maybe later you will love that soup. My sister eats a lot of cheese, loves it. In late pregnancy she was always saying ‘there’s something wrong with this.. (macaroni cheese, cheese on toast, other cheesy item), it tastes gross’. After bubs arrived, cheese was yummy again. I think late pregnancy must be like living in someone else’s body for a while.
hmmm that’s a great point! because all of the ingredients in the soup sound fantastic, and then when i took a bite, i made bitter beer face.
I had similar experiences with both my pregnancies, and now that my kids are older, they still don’t like those foods I thought I liked (while I started liking them again as soon as they were born). I think the baby takes over your taste buds. So weird, but so cool!
Interestingly, my niece is dairy intolerant (not allergic, but she gets tummy ache if she overdoes it).
This is so interesting. My sis-in-law has 4 children. Children 1 & 3 are both lactose intolerant, and during both of those pregnancies (not the other 2), she became horribly lactose intolerant herself. The human body is amazing!
I love your tinsel hair! Its super cute! I’ve had all kinds of hairstyles growing up but for the opposite reason as you. My dad was a single parent so I had a bowl cut, uneven bangs, mismatched layers. Yeah, I try to look at pictures of that time period as little as possible!
I’m always changing my hair color and cut. The craziest thing I did was color it black. Not because black is crazy and not because it looked bad (I’m pale with blue eyes– black tends to go nicely with that), but because it took FOREVER to get out!!! I actually had to chop almost all of my hair off to get it out!
My most daring hair change would have been when I went from long hair to a chin length perm! I liked it, but after a couple months I LOVED it! It was quite a shock at first! Just a little extra length and a little less curl and it was great!
I love the tinsel hair! I got mine about two weeks ago and finally tonight 2 out of the 3 fell out. I saw people in the summer have it and it was just plain silly. This time of year it’s just too perfect!
I HATE tinsel for all of the reasons you mentioned. I also have tragic memories of my old cat, Princess, who used to chew on it. Let’s just say she once half-way “eliminated” a piece that she had eaten. I had to pull the rest out. ๐ Horrible childhood memory that has stuck with me! ha No more tinsel for me. Ever.
I like the little festive hair strand! I play it pretty safe with my ‘do. The craziest thing I can think of is the repeated highlights essentially turning my hair blonde. Not a good look.
hahaha!!! i would be traumatized
LOVE tinsel! My grandmother always had it ๐
So I love your sweater..maternity or not..where is it from???
thank you! it’s from express, last year. it used to be a tunic.. and now with the belly, it’s a shirt ๐
I used to shave the bottom half of my hair off. For a while I had vanilla pudding colored highlights. Then once I tried to dye my hair brown, but it just ended up being a really dark red color.
I completely agree about the tinsel! I am the only one in my family who doesnt like it though so we still put in on our tree :/
Whatโs the most adventurous thing youโve ever done with your hair? = pink hair highlights when I was about 17.
And I love your white sweater and you holding the bowl with your bump…it’s a beautiful picture. Somehow I bet if you made it black and white, it would be even cooler. Something really artsy and earthy and maternal..the bump, the bowl, the hands, the food. Sorry to geek out photographically on you…I dig that shot ๐
Haha, oh no! Tinsel hair! My most crazy hair was a short, a-symmetrical bob. And I LOVED it!
For the first time in my whole life I chnged my haitcut this week! I always had really long hair but this week I went to a famous coiffeur here in Paris who also styles the stars to be a model.
I miss my long hair a little bit but the change feels so good! I feel like a new person!
And the coiffeur did such a good job!!! When in Paris you have to take advantage of such opportunities!
New city, new hair!
Love the hair tinsel–my friend just got that done too!
In october I went really short with my hair after having long hair my whole life! I was terrifed but I absolutely love it!!
The craziest thing I ever did with my hair was giving myself bangs in 3rd grade. It was such a traumatic experience that I’ve played it safe with my hair ever since. ๐
I love the little bit of tinsel in your hair!
I have SUPER curly hair (like, straight up ringlets), and two or three years ago, I got so fed up with it, that I just chopped it off (kind of like Kerri Russel when she cut her hair on Felicity, actually). It felt SO GOOD, especially during the summer, but I eventually grew it out!
I love changing up my hair! The key for me is actually having a hairstylist I trust. I worked at a salon for five years so I’ve had long and cut it short and then from there went from blonde to red to almost black. I’ve also had color – blue, purple, green, orange. I wouldn’t have tried any of those colors if i didn’t work in a salon that’s for sure! The only thing I’ve tried that I absolutely hated was a shag. Too many layers for my liking!
We test drove sooooo many cars 2 weeks ago….all smallish suvs since I am currently 35.5 weeks pregnant! We decided on the 2012 Subaru Forester and am absolutely in love! Highly recommend!
I agree with what people have said previously about tastebuds changing at the end of pregnancy, I’ve noticed similar things with people who have been pregnant!
I don’t know if you’ve seen it already but I wanted to show you this video. I thought you’d like it – it’s a video made by Navy personnel to let their families know they were coming home from a deployment in time for Christmas! Proper made me cry, it’s so sweet ๐
It didn’t embed so here’s the link: http://youtu.be/SDZcGz4vmJcSDZcGz4vmJc
I love the tinsel! It’s nice and subtle and just fun. ๐ I’ll have to try it!
Every time you mention Sauce or Frost, I get a hankering! Same with Sabino Canyon. Have you hiked Pima lately? It’s gorgeous too, although I almost stepped on a snake there once… 0_0
i get bored with my hair a lot so i tend to grow it out..then chop it off and dye it hah. my hair has been through quite a bit. i need a cut badddd right now. i love ur style-so pretty!
I hated tinsel as a child. My great aunt used to cover her tree in it and I just have weird memories of her great big living room that was old and everything was covered in plastic, and then there was this big dark tree totally covered in shiny tinsel. It freaked me out. Plus, it is so bad if your dog ingests it! Like someone mentioned, sometimes you have to.. help remove it. But it can also entwine in your pets intestines and require surgery/be fatal.
For some reason, I LOVE tinsel now. I don’t use it because I have a dog, but I guess those old scary memories are refreshing for me now that I’m an adult. Weird, haha!
When I was a senior in high school, I temporarily dyed the underlayers of my strawberry-blonde hair hot pink. It was fun. A little too ballsy for older me, though. ๐
I used to work at a salon and was in a couple runway shows for hair but the craziest I ever let anyone get was platinum blonde hair with fire engine red low lights under like Xtinas back in the day!
I love your white sweater btw!
That sucks that you didn’t like the soup. I LOVE their butternut apple soup….sooooo good!
Totally agree on the soup thing…had a taste the other day at Whole Foods and nearly threw up. That is saying a a lot because I love WF’s but really? it was like chunky bland baby food, tasted like a sock!
did you get the same flavor??
This is what we use on our tree – http://www.pietersmatinworks.com/product-p/00181.htm
cleaner and prettier than typical tinsel and safer for animals. ๐
Girl, you must have a LOT of hair for that tinsel to be so hidden! ๐
I had to laugh here…I recognized your top being from Express in the first photo with your hair where you can only see the collar because I have the exact same one, same color and all. ๐
I love pairing it with leggings!
