Gnarly

Hi friends! Hope youโ€™ve had a beautiful day so far <3 Thanks again for all of your lovely bday wishes!

flowers

(Pilot, you make me swoon)

I promised myself that Iโ€™d never post a picture of my feet on the blog, because I have gnarly dancer feet and toes, but this will be an exception:

foot

At work, weโ€™re supposed to โ€œmove with a sense of urgency.โ€ Well, I moved with a sense of urgency right into a metal rolling rack, which bonked in between my flip flop clad pinky toe. Iโ€™m not sure what hurt worse: breaking my toe, or biting my tongue so I wouldn’t shriek an expletive in the middle of the store. Said toe is now purple and the size of two toes.

Broken toe, had to close on my birthday, stuck there an extra half hour, not my favorite night :/

This morning, I had some lovely breakfast cookie dough cereal:

cereal

and an amazing DT class. Who said you need a pinky toe to booty shake? ๐Ÿ˜‰

When I came home, I made some lunch:

salad

Arugula, beet, Dante sheep cheese, Garlic Gold, balsamic and basil

and finally opened my b-day gift from the Pilot:

cover

A KINDLE!!!

kindle

Iโ€™ve been wanting one forever because I love to read, but have put it on the backburner because techie purchases scare me. It already seems to be very user-friendly and I love that it has 3G and WiFi, so I can download books wherever I am.

Do you have a Kindle? What should I download first?? (Recent reads have been The Help, Good to Great, and Sarahโ€™s Key)

Definitely need some reading material for the NY trip! Iโ€™ll just be there for one night (Sun night) and one day (I leave Monday night), but if I have time, I may plan a blog get-together Monday afternoon for lunch/snack/whatever ๐Ÿ™‚ Iโ€™d love to hang out with some NY bloggies.

Iโ€™m off to work! Today will be a much better day.

rose

xoxo,

Gina

Something to talk about: Have you broken anything before? Iโ€™ve broken my nose three times โ€“the most legendary was when I fainted and fell on my face, on TILE floor- and my toes a few times doing the dance thang (pointe is no picnic)

    Those flowers are soooo pretty!
Sorry to hear about your toe – hope it feels better soon! ๐Ÿ™‚

You poor thing!! Sorry about the toe! And hey, today will be much better! Just got my bro a kindle for his bday too. He loves it. If you finished girl with the dragon tattoo, check out the other 2 books in the series. They’re great! Happy belated! I once got hit in the face with a tennis racket during a doubles match and my front left tooth broke…now I have a fake 1/2 front tooth and emotional scarring/fear of tennis.

  4. Carrie on November 13, 2010 at 1:00 pm

I’ve never broken anything, but my best friend broke her nose, then a guy ran into her and his head smacked right into her already broken nose. She had to get plastic surgery after that right before we went on a summer trip. It was so sad for her to have that nose splint laying on the beach!

  5. Katie on November 13, 2010 at 1:09 pm

omg! I have gnarly dancer feet and toes too, lol! I hate the way my toes look, but its from dancing all my life, and I am so sorry about you toe : ( I hope it gets better soon : )

the roses are BEAUTIFUL! WHat a sweet Pilot! Just amazing! Love pink!

Glad you had a wonderful birthday!!!

I broke my middle finger when I was 5, I slammed it in the car door, it hurt like heck!

  6. Anna @ History Running Girl on November 13, 2010 at 1:12 pm

Check out the free kindle books on the amazon website! I’ve found some great authors that way.

    I love my kindle.

  7. Nicole on November 13, 2010 at 1:22 pm

I love my Kindle! I was hesitant to buy one because I love “collecting” books, but as a military family it’s not very practical to have a million books that we have to cart all over the country every three years. I very highly recommend “The Art of Racing in the Rain”. It’s such a touching story.

  8. Janna on November 13, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Oh no! Hope your toe heals up soon – that must have hurt!!!

I am very familiar with dance injuries (and ugly dance feet!) ๐Ÿ™‚ I tore my ACL in dance practice when I was 17! But the worst was my good friend, who broke her ankle in pointe class – we all heard the loud crack. It was not pretty.

I’ve also broken my nose too (just once though ;)) and I broke my wrist.

Hope today is a much better day for you!

  9. Katheryn on November 13, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Sorry about the toe. Ouch! I’ve broken both my legs at the same time, two toes at two different times and a finger. Not fun.

  10. Heather on November 13, 2010 at 1:34 pm

Sorry about your toe! I hope it gets better Pronto! I have to say that I am honestly proud of my disfigured dancer feet. Years of hard work went into making them what they are today. I’ve broken a lot of bones–lots of toes compliments of pointe, my ankle, shattered my knee, arm, ribs. It’s no picnic, but we all survive.

As for a download for your kindle? I highly recommend Fledgling by Octavia Butler. I read it recently for a feminism and fantasy lit class I am taking. It is actually an interesting book and completely changes your view of vampires.

Also, any update on the puppy you found on the way back to Valdosta? She’s adorable!

  11. rachel on November 13, 2010 at 1:54 pm

    Beautiful flowers! ๐Ÿ™‚
I’m sorry you had a not-so-fabulous end of your birthday with your toe/work! That last part about you hitting your nose on tile made me CRINGE!!! I have the biggest fear of falling on stairs or something and hitting my nose or teeth. Yikes!

  12. Carrie (Moves 'N Munchies) on November 13, 2010 at 1:54 pm

I have dancer feet too! I used to dance for a while when I was younger and completely screwed up my little toes!

  13. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on November 13, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Awww I’m sorry about your toe! A kindle is on my christmas list! Have you read Beneath a Marble Sky? It is such a good book.

  14. grocery goddess jen on November 13, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Sorry your bday night was a little crappy! Awesome gifts from the pilot, though.

I broke my middle finger in the third grade when a friend was on my shoulders, fell off, and snapped my finger flat back. It’s lovely to wear a splint on your middle finger, because you’re always flipping everyone off ๐Ÿ™‚

I also broke a bone in my wrist when I was 10 or 11, when I got run over by a horse. Yup. I worked at a horse farm and a young horse got spooked and trampled over me, stepping right on my back and wrist. My back was okay, but I had a rad pink cast for a while for the wrist.

Today will be a better day!

  15. Erin on November 13, 2010 at 2:40 pm

The dogs of babel is a great one. I also loved I’m Down: A Memoir and Prairie Tale: A Memoir (by Melissa Gilbert from Little House!).

  16. Samantha on November 13, 2010 at 2:40 pm

Sounds like me, I passed out on Wednesday and also on tile floor, however thank goodness I didn’t break my nose, I just busted my face haha, well 7 stitches above the eyebrow. Jealous of the kindle. I’ve wanted one but I love actual books and having them on bookcases!

  17. Erica D on November 13, 2010 at 2:46 pm

I’ve never broken anything, but my sister is a gymnast, and it seems like she’s broken every finger and toe she’s got by this point. She sends her love ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. Brittany (Eating Bird Food) on November 13, 2010 at 2:48 pm

Oh man Gina – I’m sorry to hear about your toe. What a stinky way to end your b-day! Hopefully it heals quickly.

AS for books I really enjoyed The Help and A Thousand Splendid Suns. You may have already read those though?

  19. Karyn on November 13, 2010 at 2:54 pm

happy birthday! although i guess it’s a bit belated

bummer about your toe. ouch! i’ve only broken fingers and toes *knockonwood*. i might have broken my nose when i was little (my bro thought it’d be funny to throw a golf club at my head) but since i never got it checked out i don’t know for sure. but my nose does look a bit crooked so i have my suspicions hahah

  20. Maren on November 13, 2010 at 3:25 pm

Happy Belated Birthday! What an awesome present! And I am totally loving the flowers! Gorgeous!!

Yes I have broken the toe that’s next to the pinky toe, each one, like a month apart! the reason it was that one and not my pinky is because I my pinky toe is about a centimeter shorter than the other toe! It’s so funny looking! ๐Ÿ™‚ Other than that, no broken bones! Stubbing your toe is the pits! Hope it’s better soon!

  21. Carolyn on November 13, 2010 at 3:33 pm

What a bummer of a way to end a birthday. Good think you celebrated the night before and had pretty Pilot flowers to look at!
I am a total klutz and fought hard with my brother growing up but have somehow managed not to ever break a bone. I better knock on wood before I end up breaking something now.

  22. Kelsey on November 13, 2010 at 3:33 pm

I broke my toe once. It was sophmore year of college and I stubbed it on my huge biology book. I took it as a sign from above and switched my major and had a much happier life ever since : )

For books I recommend: American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld (really long but really good), Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner (fun, girly, light reading), and The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin (self-helpish, but in a lighthearted, good way)

I have a Nook and LURVE it! Have you read The Other Boleyn Girl (Phillipa Gregory)? It’s Fantastic.

  26. Mary @ Bites and Bliss on November 13, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Ouchh!! Sorry about your toe :S I havent had straight breaks like arms or anything, but I’ve had two hairline fractures in my foot from gymnastics and a whole lot of sprains and jams from horseback riding. Although, I did break my tailbone by slamming in on the corner of a table. That was NOT fun and it still hurts if I sit on it for more than a minute or so. I can’t do certain yoga moves because of it, either. Oh..and it’s bent! Kinda weird lol

  27. Allison on November 13, 2010 at 4:41 pm

OWWWW:(:(:( Im sorry about your toe:( Somehow i have managed to never break anything even though i was the biggest tomboy and loved being active! I did get a concussion from falling off my swing after breaking it trying to get it to flip over the top lol

Its so sweet that the pilot got you a kindle:) For book suggestions, i love the classics especially russian lit! Lol aside from being a tomboy im also a major nerd:)

  28. Michelle on November 13, 2010 at 4:50 pm

  29. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on November 13, 2010 at 5:09 pm

    Omg Gina, that sucks!!!!! HUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you’re into homeopathy and Arnica is great from tissue trauma of any kind from breaks to sprains. The Boiron brand of homepathic pellets may help you. Check WF’s if you can hobble there…oh, so sorry!

Yes, I have broken most of my toes and fingers. Major jock growing up and played baseketball and volleyball and have many breaks and 2 knee surgeries to prove it ๐Ÿ™‚ Have also broken my fingers. With fingers and toes they dont cast you (as you know) they tape you up and put it in a split. Or in my case your coach takes you to the school of hard knocks tells you to get back on the court.

The kindle. So cool! I have contemplated getting one but I know me…I just wouldnt read from it. Wishful thinking ๐Ÿ™‚

    Get well soon!

  30. Jill@MyAdviceQuarterLife on November 13, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Glad you had such a wonderful birthday (minus the toe incident!). I haven’t broken any bones, but I have torn a good amount of ligaments, which I am sure are equally as unfun. Make sure to play it up so the Pilot has to pamper you!!

  31. Shanna @ Shanna Like Banana on November 13, 2010 at 5:19 pm

    Happy Bday!

I have a kindle and love it. I peruse all the cheap books for new authors that are up and coming ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. Laura on November 13, 2010 at 5:21 pm

My Kindle is my favorite material possession! There are all kinds of free books at Amazon, and some nice people at kindleboards.com keep a running list of them. I think my favorite think about the Kindle is the sampling. I’ve found so many great new authors with that feature. I’d like to recommend Justin Cronin’s “The Passage”, loved it!

    • Hailey on November 13, 2010 at 10:16 pm

i second “the passage”. reading at the moment on my nook, very inteesting so far!

  44. sassy molassy on November 13, 2010 at 11:47 pm

OUCH! That totally sucks. Stubbing your toes (and breaking them, no less) hurts so much. I haven’t ever broken a bone, but as a child I always wanted to so I could be in the hospital and hopefully have crutches. Now I know better.

  45. Casey Thomas on November 14, 2010 at 4:21 am

  47. Vicky on November 14, 2010 at 9:29 am

happy belated gina! sorry about your toe ๐Ÿ™ had to ask, because i just recently fainted and fell on my face and split my nose open (nose-first, onto hardwood, though) as well… no history of fainting, wasn’t ill, got all my bloodwork done and it came back normal… ekg normal… but any ideas what it could be attributed to? something blood work could have missed? i don’t eat red meat…iron deficiency? or just a random freak accident? just so weird and has never happened before so i’m looking for an explanation!

  48. KRISTEN'S RAW on November 14, 2010 at 10:35 am

OUCH! Sorry about your toe!!! That blows.

KINDLE – Yippee! I love mine and I loved The Help. A great book for Kindle, I’m reading it now, is Shantaram. Someone recommended it to me on Facebook. It’s super huge, great for Kindle ๐Ÿ˜‰ There was a rumor a couple years back that it might be made into a movie with Johnny Depp, but dunno. It’s fiction, but kind of autobiographical fiction in a way.

    XOXO,
