Hey, hemp

Another one of these hilarious videos:

(I still like the originals and the yoga one the best)

It definitely came to mind when I busted these out a couple of days ago:

hemp

hemp seeds! Long time, no see.

When my doc recommended upping my fat intake, hemp seeds was one of his suggestions as they’re an excellent source of healthy fats and protein. It’s been forever since I’ve used them, but they have such a nice nutty flavor and are great in smoothies and salads, and I love them in breakfast foods

like oats

hemp seeds

and yogurt creations.

If you’ve been reading the blog since the Valdosta days, you may remember when I was sprinkling superfoods like hemp, goji berries, chia seeds, cacao nibs and spirulina into everything. It was one of my ways of getting a thrill in a small town: finding new-to-me ingredients at the health food store 😉 My eats have definitely changed since I started the blog, since eats are an evolving thing and it takes some time to figure out what works best on an individual basis. I later realized that for me, fun ingredients are better suited as an accessory to meals instead of the main focus… clean, whole foods are #1.

Pizookies and pizza are #2:

What’s your favorite unique ingredient to use? I’m still a huge fan of nutritional yeast.

Hope you have a happy humpday!

xoxo

Gina

I have never tried hemp before. It looks like it would add great texture!

  2. Stefanie @TheNewHealthy on January 25, 2012 at 12:23 pm

haha I absolutely love that video! And all the ones like it. 🙂

Hahhahaha shit raw foodists say… I can’t even. Shit New Age Girls Say is also reaallly good. I’m guilty of a few of them, except I have no idea what New Age really means.

  4. Ali @ Peaches and Football on January 25, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Never tried hemp seed but it looks like it would be easy to incorporate. Tried maca (feeling all dangerous and wild in my cooking 😉 ) but found the taste totally off-putting and now have the HUGE bag shoved way back in my cabinet.

I am going to make kale chips with nut yeast for the Superbowl. Never tried kale and never tried nut yeast but I’m excited since they “look” delicious!

  5. Cat @Breakfast to Bed on January 25, 2012 at 12:25 pm

everytime you say “nutritional yeast” I think “monistat made of vitamins”

I love black sesame seeds, and hibiscus and really, really, really love einkhorn.

      ahah EW!

  6. Lena @Fit on the Rocks on January 25, 2012 at 12:25 pm

I actually really enjoy wheat germ because it adds a nice nutty flavor. I haven’t tried hemp yet.

  7. Rebecca @ Runner with an Appetite on January 25, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Love me some chia seeds! I love adding them to smoothies, oatmeal, or even making a pudding out of them. Love the weird texture of them.

  8. Lindsey on January 25, 2012 at 12:26 pm

I am patiently awaiting my order of hemp seeds and cannot wait. I use flaxseeds often and think hemp will replace it somewhat.

  9. Kris | iheartwellness.com on January 25, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Ugh, I wish I could say I was a lover of Hemp Seeds, but they just don’t rock my boat…..I dunno what it is, but I know they are so healthy for you, so sometimes I do add them to my smoothies!!

    xxoo

I think Shit Single Girls say is my favorite…ha ha. I, too, love nutritional yeast, especially on eggs or in a scramble. I went through a Chia Seed phase but I actually think I strongly prefer flaxseeds. I love their texture and nutty flavor! Especially in smooooothies.

  13. Emilie @ Emilie's Enjoyables on January 25, 2012 at 12:39 pm

I love chia seeds. I need to find some nutritional yeast, I keep meaning to try it!

  14. Sonia the Mexigarian on January 25, 2012 at 12:40 pm

Chia seeds for the win. I eat them every day in my smoothies, VOO or just sprinkled in my water with a squeeze of lemon 🙂

  17. Kristine @ Busy But Healthy on January 25, 2012 at 12:46 pm

LOVE hemp hearts! That reminds me, I should pull those out!

Have you tried the Nutritional Yeast trick for milk production yet? I’d be interested to hear if it works for you too!

    • Fitnessista on January 25, 2012 at 12:47 pm

      no, but i need to!

      • Kristine @ Busy But Healthy on January 25, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Nice, yah give it a whirl. My girlfriend is making Angela’s Mac n Cheez daily! Too bad her twins are getting close to 1 now. She wishes she would have discovered it sooner! I also love Nutritional Yeast sprinkled on popcorn with a bit of Earth Balance or Butter.

  18. Rita @ Healthy Mom, Sexy Wife on January 25, 2012 at 12:56 pm

I like hemp added to my spinach salad. I tried nutritional yeast last night on popcorn…it didn’t taste different, is it supposed to? I want to try chia seeds. I use flax – seeds and ground a lot.

  19. Emily on January 25, 2012 at 1:01 pm

Holy smokes. too hemp posts in one day. you AND tina! 🙂

  20. Anna @ The Guiltless Life on January 25, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Those videos are awesome! I love the Sh*t Yogis Say one – Lululemon did it in Vancouver, my city, so it just SO reminded me of everyone I see on a daily basis at yoga (and I am probably guilty of at least 50% of those things too…yikes!).

I love nooch too but a superfood I love a LOT? I love throwing flaxseeds or flax oil into things. I don’t taste it and it’s a great source of healthy fats!

  21. Jill on January 25, 2012 at 1:07 pm

I love chia seeds, and I put “nooch” on my spaghetti all the time. Lately I’ve been mixing a teaspoon of chia seeds into a glass of water at nighttime and drinking that, hoping that it’ll help fix some of my winter dry skin!

  22. Liz @ Southern Charm on January 25, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Cinnamon and nutritional yeast are tied for me!!

Oh I’ve been craving pizza and the picture you have of one looks AMAZING!!!

  23. Emily @ The Swallow Flies on January 25, 2012 at 1:11 pm

I’ve been dying to try nutritional yeast – I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. I’m currently obsessed with the tried-and-true flax and chia seeds.

  24. Kath on January 25, 2012 at 1:14 pm

    “You don’t love KALE!?” hahahah

  25. Rachel on January 25, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Cinnamon! 2 teaspoons on my oatmeal each morning, and I double the amount in any recipe it calls for. Superfood or not, I love it.

And you can’t beat nooch on popcorn!

  26. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on January 25, 2012 at 1:45 pm

I love hemp seeds too, and finding new things at my local health food store is one of my favourite things to do! Right now, I’m all about the cinnamon and cottage cheese (ideally together!)

  27. Laurel on January 25, 2012 at 1:54 pm

I don’t think I eat any unusual foods… although my coworkers think the fact that I put cottage cheese, black beans, and raisins on top of a bed of lettuce and call it lunch is pretty weird 🙂 to each his own!

  28. Ali on January 25, 2012 at 2:03 pm

I totally remember your super foods days! Back when you were doing the chef Training with matthew Kenny! So funny, I totally went through that phase too. Today I am like you, simple is best, except for durian!!

  29. Nicole on January 25, 2012 at 2:07 pm

I LOVE chia seeds. Chia pudding for breakfast with almond milk, fruit, protein powder and cinnamon helps keep me full till lunch! Love it.

  30. Michelle @lipstickandlunges on January 25, 2012 at 2:09 pm

I’ve never tried hemp seeds, but have used flax seeds often. I’ll have to give them a try! Love the vid, btw haha.

  31. britt on January 25, 2012 at 2:18 pm

that pizookie and pizza look amazing!! now that i live in the tiniest town ever (it has a wal-mart but not much else) i don’t get to try out as many new things as i did back in my big city days. but you can find flax seed almost anywhere and i try to add it where i can just for that extra boost.

  32. Kelly @ Vegolosophy on January 25, 2012 at 2:25 pm

I love flax seed. I always put a sprinkle into my oats, pancakes, cookies, and smoothies. Great way to get extra fiber in the meal and you can’t really taste it 🙂

  33. Heather Eats Almond Butter on January 25, 2012 at 2:28 pm

Loving Brewer’s yeast. The nutritional profile is similar to nutritional yeast, but I prefer the Brewer’s and sprinkle it on everything from eggs to veggies to oats. I started eating a ton of it when I was breastfeeding as it is a lactogenic food, and I still can’t get enough of it.

My favorite is the yoga video. Cracks me up every time I watch it.

  34. Life's a Bowl on January 25, 2012 at 2:34 pm

I’ve never tried hemp seeds before but I’ve been meaning to pick up some chia seeds- heard they’re great additions to oat or yogurt bowls! I’ve also been meaning to buy flax- my doc recommended it to help with my achy joint symptoms…

P.S. Sh*t Brides Say is pretty funny too!!!

  35. michele on January 25, 2012 at 2:35 pm

pureed pumpkin and ground flax. I add it to everything I bake or cook for my kids. Like pancakes, muffins

  41. Anna Crouch on January 25, 2012 at 4:07 pm

HAHAH I was literally cracking up at the raw food video. Soooo funny!!!

  42. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on January 25, 2012 at 4:08 pm

Oh I love what you said about the superfoods, and finding thrills in a small town, accessory not the main focus now, experimenting, life changes, blog changes, etc.

You covered everything that I could say on superfoods, blogging about food, and life changes…in a couple sentences. My life is very parallel! When you were dabbling with them, I was too; but now not really. I know what I like and dont have the desire to spend 10 bucks for a tiny bag of something that’s just…meh to me.

And yes, life/food habits change; and so do blogs. Amen 🙂

  43. ashley on January 25, 2012 at 4:45 pm

Aw, thanks for the link love!! 🙂 Wish I could bring you some cereal sauce + fresh popped amaranth! Also, I am a hemp-food lover! Been thinking about you friend!

  44. dep on January 25, 2012 at 5:03 pm

Last year i saw a recipe on a blog i wanted to make which had hemp seeds. I’d never seen them and went to the only organic store in town that MIGHT carry them – i felt like a total criminal. They were asking around…hemp? Hemp seeds? Uh no, you could try x….meanwhile there’s a line forming behind me and people are staring. It sounded like i wanted to grow it. And the place x – that had been shut down for supplying garden items that help grow the actual thing – anything hemp related appears illegal where i live. I never looked for hemp seeds again.

  45. Kilee on January 25, 2012 at 5:06 pm

I love, love, love hemp seeds. Thank you for reminding me about them because I haven’t ordered them in awhile. I get them either from Mountain Rose Herbs or in a 3-pack off of Amazon’s subscribe and ship.

I love all types of “super-foods” and try not to get too caught up in pricy wonder-foods. I believe that focusing on whole, natural foods most of the time with little fun ones here and there works best.

Goldenberries are my favorite “super-food.” They helped me replace my Sour Patch Kids addiction.

  46. Veronica on January 25, 2012 at 6:13 pm

Thanks for posting our video! We have fun making it and thinking up crazy things we hear raw foodists say to us. 🙂

Just wanted you to know I made the sweet potato, goat cheese &chive recipe you shared as a side dish this evening and it was very popular! I think I learned about Snobby Joe’s from your blog too. I’m going to check out your food section for some more ideas. Thanks!

I am obsessed with hemp seeds. I eat them every day…so nutty, so amazing…I am making some hemp seed milk this weekend I decided. After I make cashew milk. I love me some hemp!!!

That video is great but I think you will appreciate this. I send it to one of my guy friends who is also a trainer and we were comparing how many of the lines we heard. i also sent it to my clients and a few of them write back like “how did that guy get in my house and listen to me during out session???” SOOOOO funny!!!
