Random Rainy Saturday

Hi friends 😀 How are you? Hope you’ve had a beautiful and restful weekend.

Ours has been a little random, along with the weather- it’s still doom and gloom over here!

weather

(Taken from the base gym)

We were pretty lazy yesterday, but managed to hit up the gym for a workout. We came home and I was working on work stuff, and after cleaning the kitchen, the Pilot was still in there, but not making a sound.

It was totally silent.

What in the what was he doing in there?

Intently chiseling away at something with my giant chef knife

A watermelon rose!

Talent, my friends 😀

Snack was a chocolate banana cashew butter protein ice cream:

ice cream

(1 C almond milk, 1 scoop Sun Warrior, 1/2 banana, decaf espresso powder, raw cacao powder, maca, cinnamon, ice)

and since it was treat night, I enjoyed a gluten-free beer with my dinner at BJs,

and we met up with the fam at Something Sweet for dessert.

something sweet

Something Sweet is a coffee shop/dessert lounge, which has free WiFi and is open super late.

I rolled with a caramel rooibos tea:

aaaaaand a gluten-free espresso torte.

I have no words for the foodgasms that followed. It was so light and chocolaty 🙂

This morning we’re meeting friends for b-fast and then doing a little shopping… we’re heading to LA on Tuesday 😀 (More deets to come)

Any fun Saturday adventures??

See ya later today <3

mmm those desserts look so yummy!

that does take some carving skills in case he doesn’t want to be a pilot forever he could always do some food styling 😉

  2. Jenny (Fit Girl Foodie) on April 10, 2011 at 12:45 pm

Omg what sad weather 🙁 Luckily we are in the 80’s now so it is real hot! Wow that cheesecake looks delicious! We don’t have very many places that serve glutten free dessert. Looks like a fun night 😀

  3. Sarah @TheExPat Bride on April 10, 2011 at 12:45 pm

This might be a stupid question, but what are the benefits of Gluten-free besides the obvious fact that some people are intolerant. I’m starting to see it pop up every where, but I don’t really understand what it is or why eat it….

    • Jill on April 10, 2011 at 5:45 pm

I’ve read that unless you actually are gluten-intolerant, there are no benefits whatsoever to following a gluten-free diet. Often, it’s worse, because then people don’t get their recommended servings of grain products because they’re afraid of eating gluten. I believe the article I read was in Women’s Health or Shape magazine, not sure which. This was my own opinion before reading the article, but I’d say that if you’re not allergic to it, just don’t worry about it and try to eat a balanced diet. Life is tedious enough as it is without adding more stuff to worry about in your food.

    • Fitnessista on April 10, 2011 at 5:46 pm

there’s no real reason to avoid gluten unless you’re allergic or sensitive to it. i see people doing it for weight loss reasons, which is silly because a lot of products that contain gluten are actually full of other nutrients. i avoid gluten for the most part because i’m sensitive to it- it makes my stomach hurt :/

Loving the scruff. That’s the first thing my hubby doesn’t do on leave, shave 😉 Next would be wake up before 9 AM :p

      republic of bananas 🙂

  8. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on April 10, 2011 at 1:12 pm

WOW, the Pilot has some mad skills! Is that a skill he picked up when he was deployed? 😉 When I lived in Bahrain the watermelons were about 3x the size of the ones we have here in Canada, and cheaper too! (As you can imagine, there were watermelon babies on a regular basis!) The torte you ordered looks absolutely amazing!

  9. Whitney on April 10, 2011 at 1:32 pm

Haha it was rainy and cold here as well. We went to the movies. We couldn’t decide what to see, so we saw two movies :-d

  10. Ashley on April 10, 2011 at 1:35 pm

The photo of the Pilot holding the knife is HILarious! I tried a GF beer Friday night for the first time. It was New Planet, and pretty good! Very hoppy!

    • Dana Marie on April 10, 2011 at 3:47 pm

yeah it’s impressive he did it with that big knife! It seems like that kind of stuff is done with a paring knife or something smaller.
very pretty and I always like the character/goofy faces

      • Fitnessista on April 10, 2011 at 5:42 pm

i have a paring knife, but wanted to use the bigger one. he’s goofy like that 🙂

  11. Evan Thomas on April 10, 2011 at 1:43 pm

I would swoon if anyone gave me a watermelon rose. Flowers you can eat are definitely the best gift(especially covered in chocolate).

  12. chelsey @ clean eating chelsey on April 10, 2011 at 1:44 pm

He is super talented! Whatta guy!

That dessert bar sounds so much fun – I wonder if we have anything like that around where I live!

  13. Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries on April 10, 2011 at 1:48 pm

My fiance and I have started hunting for apartments! That’s my exciting weekend news 🙂

  14. Ruth on April 10, 2011 at 1:50 pm

I have to say I really, really love seeing lots of photos of you with the Pilot after following your journey thruogh all the months without him. Makes me smile inside! Cheesy, I know, but true. 😉

    • Fitnessista on April 10, 2011 at 5:44 pm

thank you, that’s so sweet! we’re really happy to get to hang out again 🙂

  15. Christa on April 10, 2011 at 1:58 pm

Oh my, the dessert looks delish! what gluten free beer do you drink? I just heard about a new organic one by New Planet available in the US, sold at Whole Foods… sadly good GF beer is hard to find in Canada 🙁

    • Fitnessista on April 10, 2011 at 5:43 pm

it was redbridge and surprisingly delicious!

  16. Heather on April 10, 2011 at 2:02 pm

    yum those desserts look good!

  19. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on April 10, 2011 at 2:19 pm

He’s a catch! It’s hard enough to find a man who will bring you regular roses…let alone carve you a delicious one 🙂 That coffee shop looks insanely delicious, but also kind of dangerous. I feel like I’d go there to “work” and eat dessert every day!

  20. Brittney on April 10, 2011 at 2:27 pm

Digging the facial hair, fo real tho.

    You, Gina, cute as ever.

  21. Ashley @ Feeding Ashley on April 10, 2011 at 2:47 pm

What an awesome treat night. Your torte looks to die for!

  23. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on April 10, 2011 at 2:51 pm

chocolate banana cashew butter protein ice cream looks great

but then i got to the chocolate torte. omg. droolfest!

And the Pilot’s rose for you…omg he could always get a job on a cruise ship making fruit art if all else fails 🙂 Kidding! But seriously, that is AMAZING! It always shocks me when people break out their little hidden artistic talents b/c I am always….so impressed and wish i could do that!

    Enjoy your Sunday 🙂

  24. Emily on April 10, 2011 at 2:57 pm

I love the rose. Husbands are the best 🙂 And love the protein ice cream! I’m about to whip up some raw cacao cashew mousse myself. My Saturday was pleasantly exhausting, and now I’m relishing a Sunday rest day.

  30. Dana Marie on April 10, 2011 at 3:46 pm

I love late night coffee shops – I haven’t been out for dessert in ages but I wonder if you ever checked out Cafe Lalo here in NYC? It’s small and always packed but it’s very cute, and from what I remember delish.

  31. Krista on April 10, 2011 at 3:58 pm

Melt my heart with that watermelon-rose carving!! If the pilot has any equally sweet single friends back in the Raleigh area, please send them my way! 😉

  32. Sheena on April 10, 2011 at 4:04 pm

I love dessert places, especially ones that offer divine flourless tartes like the one you enjoyed! Hopefully you are heading to LA to negotiate talks on your upcoming cooking show at The Food Network 🙂

It’s supposed to rain in here in north TX today but doesn’t look like it may actually happen. I wouldn’t mind a little rain and some cooler weather.

    Desserts looked yummy!!

    • Fitnessista on April 10, 2011 at 5:39 pm

i know right?! he’s crazy haha

  40. Kt on April 10, 2011 at 5:24 pm

Hi Gina! Wow that torte looks yummers.

I was hoping you could answer a question for me. I really want to incorporate protein powder into my diet (trying to gain muscle) and I want to buy vanilla Sun Warrior. The thing is, I’ve never tried a protein powder that I liked (but have only had hemp, Vega, and maybe whey once). Do you love Sun Warrior because its the best tasting protein powder out there or do you love it because it actually tastes good (ie, not just that its better than other powders, but that you really love the taste/texture of it?).

Thanks so much! I just don’t want to waste $$ on something I’ll never use.

    • Fitnessista on April 10, 2011 at 5:39 pm

i actually LOVE the taste and texture of it. it’s very smooth and lightly sweet- i think you’ll love it

      • Kt on April 10, 2011 at 6:35 pm

        thank you!
