Reader Review: BodyMedia Fit giveaway-ENDED

I’m kind of obsessed with fitness gadgets.

Run

Not really in the sense that I own a ton of them, but they fascinate me. For some, I can never get over how ridiculous (or inappropriate?) they are:

P39089BSource

and others, I watch and notice other runners or gym-goers using them before doing my own research and potentially committing to a purchase.

A couple of the things I thoroughly watched and researched before biting the bullet and getting my own: the iPod (it scared me for a long time, as does most technology, but it’s so much more useful and user-friendly than I imagined), the heart rate monitor (I use my Polar for almost every workout) and the Garmin for running.

I’m the same way with popular fitness DVDs. Even if I don’t commit to the workout or follow the specified plan, I enjoy watching them occasionally to get new moves for my classes and personal workouts. Some of the best I’ve tried: Physique 57, Insanity, Zumba, Shiva Rea and TurboFire.ย

The first time I did TurboFire, I couldn’t help but wonder what the heck some of the participants were wearing on their arms.

It wasn’t a heart rate monitor or iPod, so after a quick Google search, I found something similar:

A BodyMedia Fit device.

So what is it?

A device that assists with meeting fitness goals. You wear the armband throughout your day – it tracks how many calories you burn, how many steps you take, when you were most active and how much sleep you get. You can send this data to a computer or smartphone, enter what you eat and set goals. The activity manager keeps you on track with specific feedback about your progress.

Here’s an idea of what the dashboard looks like:

Bodymedia

You do have to have a subscription to access the dashboard ($6.95/month and first 3 months are free).

Anyway, when I first found out about it, I was excited to eventually add one to my collection, but after I became pregnant and wasn’t trying to reach any new fitness goals, I didn’t think it was necessary.

BodyMedia recently offered to send me one to try, but instead I thought it would be fun to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive their choice between the wireless device (which uses Bluetooth capabilities to transport data to your computer)

Wireless

or the Core (which connects to the computer via USB).

Core

This giveaway has ended!

Congratulations to the lucky winner:

(I did a random number generator for the page the winner would be on, then the comment on that page- so page 13, comment 11)

Since I didn’t hear from this giveaway winner in two weeks, I picked a new winner via Facebook challenge. (10/21)

Congrats, girl! Send me your info (fitnessista at gmail dot com) and I’ll send it along to the BodyMedia fairy ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you again to everyone for entering! Stay tuned for lots of awesome giveaways.

xoxo

I have a couple of goals. One is to hit 1:45 on the 1/2 marathon I’m running in a couple of weeks…but more importantly, I’m trying to rehab my hip without surgery, so my number 1 goal is to increase core strength and work my neglected leg muscles.

  3. Ananda on October 4, 2012 at 1:08 pm

My current fitness goal is to get leaner. I think that I’m pretty strong and fit but I have this jiggle in my legs and abs which is making me feel a bit uncomfortable. I don’t have far to go so I’m just trying to eat right, exercise consistently and still enjoy life! I’ve looked at the BodyMedia Fits before and they seem like a fantastic tool to reach your goals!

My new fitness goal is to include my family! I am addicted to zumba and spin classes, but the husband is terrified of group fitness and the gym is not a dog-friendly place! So, we are working on tailoring our schedule to include a nightly walk/jog with the mutts (in addition to gym time). Easier said than done, but totally worth the effort!
Oh, and I already liked you on FB ๐Ÿ™‚

I liked The Fitnessista on Facebook!

My current fitness goal is just to keep getting some exercise in for the remainder of my pregnancy. Obviously I don’t have much use for the BodyMedia fit at the moment, but our little guy should be here in a few weeks, and it will probably help a lot with getting back into shape after baby.

I also “like” you on facebook ๐Ÿ™‚

My current fitness goal is to be able to run a 5k without having to take a walking break, while keeping it under 9:30 per mile. I can do a 5k with walking breaks and maintain about 9 min/mile, but I’m working on eliminating the need for walking breaks. It is really fun to watch my fitness improve. ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. katie on October 4, 2012 at 1:11 pm

How awesome! It’s really cool that you’re doing this as a giveaway to your readers ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m new- I just subscribed to you on my rss feed and added on fb (it’ll be nice to have some fitness reminders on my fb feed too haha)!

My goal is to keep tracking! Being this overweight I had no idea what was going into my body. I would underestimate, rationalize, give-in to the calories. I have always had binge-eating and emotional eating issues, but I’m not using them as an excuse any longer. By tracking, I’m not giving up the power to food and allowing it to kick me in the butt. Instead I’m kicking my old lifestyle to the curb!

Only issue I’ve had is over estimating my calories burned during a day or during work-outs. I am worried about tracking exercise on MFP cause I’m sure it’s overestimating because it doesn’t know my intensity, heart rate, etc. I think being able to know how many calories I actually track a day will help push me outdoors to work out more ๐Ÿ˜€

And bonus/extra goal: keep bloggin’- it seriously helps with keeping accountable, talking through issues, reflecting, keeping motivated. You are a great inspiration ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m trying to get FASTER. I can run distance, but my speed relatively stays the same, even with interval training. I don’t think I’m pushing myself hard enough, so I’m trying to get on that!

  11. tiffany on October 4, 2012 at 1:11 pm

i’d like to gain and maintain lean muscle mass to keep me running and doing well in races!! this would be a fun gadget to have.

  12. Kate on October 4, 2012 at 1:11 pm

My goal is to cut down a little so I can really see those muscles I’ve been building!

  13. Christine on October 4, 2012 at 1:11 pm

My fitness goal is to lower my body fat %…I know those muscles are under their somewhere!

  14. Sarah on October 4, 2012 at 1:12 pm

I’m getting ready to run my first race/event – a 5k obstacle course! After that I’d like to try for a 10k and continue losing weight/getting stronger.

  15. Conni on October 4, 2012 at 1:12 pm

My current fitness goal is to start seriously practicing yoga. I’ve dabbled for about a year now ( a class here, a video there) but I want to start taking my practice seriously.

  16. Kristine Cieslik on October 4, 2012 at 1:12 pm

I would love to lose the last 10 lbs! 50+ down just 10 more to go!!

  18. Jeni on October 4, 2012 at 1:12 pm

My current fitness goal is to decrease my body fat percentage. I have really improved my strength over the summer (yay!), but I think I need to clean up my eats a little more.

  19. Mara on October 4, 2012 at 1:12 pm

I injured myself running a marathon and the required downtime has equaled a 10 pound weight gain :(.
My current goal is to lose that weight.

  20. Kristy's Health Revolution on October 4, 2012 at 1:13 pm

My goal is also to increase lean body mass. I’m happy with my size and shape, but feel I could lose some of the flab and increase some muscle. I know I need to start doing more weight training to achieve that goal, so I’m working towards starting a program that issues that.

  21. Katie R on October 4, 2012 at 1:13 pm

My goal is get faster! I’m trying to challenge myself to do more speedwork and intervals rather than just steady rate cardio all the time.

  22. Kristy's Health Revolution on October 4, 2012 at 1:13 pm

    I liked you on Facebook (I can’t believe I hadn’t already!)

  23. Lauren W on October 4, 2012 at 1:14 pm

My current fitness goal is to get leaner through a better diet and to move more throughout the day. I am strong through weight training–and I do cardio but I have been maintaining the same weight. Hoping that fitting in more walks with my dog and being more mindful of my eating habits will work. Already a fan on facebook! Great giveaway by the way…

  24. Meghan @ After the Ivy League on October 4, 2012 at 1:14 pm

  26. Olivia Hill on October 4, 2012 at 1:15 pm

My fitness goal (which has been a pain in the bootay to achieve) is to lose those LAST KILLER FIVE POUNDS. I feel like this armband would help me figure EXACTLY what I need to do to lose the weight.

  27. Amie on October 4, 2012 at 1:15 pm

I would like to be able to run faster and sign up for a race soon.

  28. Kalyn on October 4, 2012 at 1:15 pm

My current fitness goal is to become more fit (through running), increase lean body mass while decreasing excess fat. No biggie… ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. Mary on October 4, 2012 at 1:16 pm

  34. Kelly on October 4, 2012 at 1:16 pm

My fitness goal is to get my body back in shape after having a baby in January. I ran my second half marathon before I knew I was pregnant and I want to get back into running shape.

  35. Mary on October 4, 2012 at 1:16 pm

    also, liked you on facebook

  36. Kelly on October 4, 2012 at 1:17 pm

    I’m also a facebook fan!

  37. Amanda on October 4, 2012 at 1:17 pm

My fitness goal is to also add more lean body mass. For a long time I was putting far too much emphasis on cardio and not enough on strength. I’ve been hitting the weights up more regularly though and am aiming to continue this! Not only do I feel better but I’m not STARVING all the time like when I was doing hours of cardio.

I already “like” you on Facebook ๐Ÿ™‚

  38. lauren on October 4, 2012 at 1:18 pm

My fitness goal is to have a 100% attendance rate at my prenatal pilates classes!

  39. Yvette on October 4, 2012 at 1:18 pm

To enjoy, and get through, my 7 planned/paid for marathons safely

  40. Christine on October 4, 2012 at 1:18 pm

I’ve been wanting one of these for awhile! My current fitness goal is to lose belly fat – darn trouble area.

  41. Kristin on October 4, 2012 at 1:18 pm

My current goal is to get rid of the rest of the weight I gained during pregnancy, which is around 20 pounds (I put on 80 pounds total….I was hungry). But I’d probably be happy even if I lost 10 or 15. I’m at that stage where my weight isn’t going down anymore and I’m running my butt off!

    This device looks super interesting!

  42. julia on October 4, 2012 at 1:18 pm

My fitness goal is to walk more as well as do workouts at home our outside. I don’t belong to a gym right now and I’m just a few pounds over my goal weight so I’d like to use this device to track my progress.

  43. Tess J on October 4, 2012 at 1:19 pm

I’m currently trying to incorporate circuits and weights in twice a week with my regular walking and outdoor cardio. I can already see a difference in my strength and stamina thanks to the mix ๐Ÿ™‚

  44. kari on October 4, 2012 at 1:19 pm

I’m coming off a broken elbow that has kept me away from any exercise involving weights for 3 weeks. My goal is to start getting back into exercise beyond walking, figure out what I’m able to do in terms of weight training, and get my muscle mass back up.

  45. Mari on October 4, 2012 at 1:19 pm

My current fitness goal is to lose 15 pounds. Two down, 13 to go!!

  46. kari on October 4, 2012 at 1:19 pm

And I already like you on Facebook!

  47. Peggy on October 4, 2012 at 1:19 pm

I am dying to try one of these! I am also trying to increase lean body mass, and I think having as much information as possible is the best way to get that done.

  48. Kaylie on October 4, 2012 at 1:20 pm

My current fitness goal isn’t necessarily to lose weight. I am an athletic, muscular gal but I would love to improve muscle tone and turn some of my belly fat into better core muscle! I’ve incorporated a lot more weight training as well as HIIT (yay Tabata Thursdays!) over the past few months and can definitely tell I’ve been getting stronger.

  49. Peggy on October 4, 2012 at 1:20 pm

And I’m already a fan on FB ๐Ÿ™‚

  50. Dina on October 4, 2012 at 1:20 pm

My goal is to improve my cardiovascular health and increase my strength! I have to admit, I’m sure I will be surprised at how much room I have for improvement and this sounds like the perfect gadget to give me the hard facts I need ๐Ÿ™‚
