Reader Review: BodyMedia Fit giveaway-ENDED

I’m kind of obsessed with fitness gadgets.

Run

Not really in the sense that I own a ton of them, but they fascinate me. For some, I can never get over how ridiculous (or inappropriate?) they are:

P39089BSource

and others, I watch and notice other runners or gym-goers using them before doing my own research and potentially committing to a purchase.

A couple of the things I thoroughly watched and researched before biting the bullet and getting my own: the iPod (it scared me for a long time, as does most technology, but it’s so much more useful and user-friendly than I imagined), the heart rate monitor (I use my Polar for almost every workout) and the Garmin for running.

I’m the same way with popular fitness DVDs. Even if I don’t commit to the workout or follow the specified plan, I enjoy watching them occasionally to get new moves for my classes and personal workouts. Some of the best I’ve tried: Physique 57, Insanity, Zumba, Shiva Rea and TurboFire.ย

The first time I did TurboFire, I couldn’t help but wonder what the heck some of the participants were wearing on their arms.

It wasn’t a heart rate monitor or iPod, so after a quick Google search, I found something similar:

A BodyMedia Fit device.

So what is it?

A device that assists with meeting fitness goals. You wear the armband throughout your day – it tracks how many calories you burn, how many steps you take, when you were most active and how much sleep you get. You can send this data to a computer or smartphone, enter what you eat and set goals. The activity manager keeps you on track with specific feedback about your progress.

Here’s an idea of what the dashboard looks like:

Bodymedia

You do have to have a subscription to access the dashboard ($6.95/month and first 3 months are free).

Anyway, when I first found out about it, I was excited to eventually add one to my collection, but after I became pregnant and wasn’t trying to reach any new fitness goals, I didn’t think it was necessary.

BodyMedia recently offered to send me one to try, but instead I thought it would be fun to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive their choice between the wireless device (which uses Bluetooth capabilities to transport data to your computer)

Wireless

or the Core (which connects to the computer via USB).

Core

This giveaway has ended!

Congratulations to the lucky winner:

(I did a random number generator for the page the winner would be on, then the comment on that page- so page 13, comment 11)

Since I didn’t hear from this giveaway winner in two weeks, I picked a new winner via Facebook challenge. (10/21)

Congrats, girl! Send me your info (fitnessista at gmail dot com) and I’ll send it along to the BodyMedia fairy ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you again to everyone for entering! Stay tuned for lots of awesome giveaways.

xoxo

I need to hit the weights more! I’d love to see more muscle definition.

  2. Meg on October 4, 2012 at 1:20 pm

    Hi Gina,
Thanks for the opportunity. I have been struggling with my weight for a couple of years now. Diet doesnt seem to be the problem, I eat mostly clean and whole foods. I tend to struggle with exercise, I find that I get bored with it easily and I am awkward at it and not really sure if I am doing things correctly.
If I lived near you, I would certainly take your classes!

So I guess I do want to lose the weight but more importantly my goal is to be the healthiest I can be.

Ps. Are you the Gina on Opensky? I always get sunwarrior through you…
    Thanks again,
    Megan

  9. Katie on October 4, 2012 at 1:22 pm

I am trying to mix up my workouts! I have been doing the same thing for a while (helloooo Turbo Kick!), and I know I need to switch it up to see more results, so I am putting running and spinning back in my routine.

  13. Leann on October 4, 2012 at 1:24 pm

My fitness goal is to run my first race in December! It’s just a 5K to support my friends charity, but I’m really nervous! I would also like to improve my cardiovascular heart rate, so I don’t get winded as easily and I can keep up with my friends when we work out : )

  14. Lisa @ Fresh Spinach on October 4, 2012 at 1:24 pm

My fitness goal is to build more lean muscle and improve my posture. Losing a few pounds would be lovely too. I’m also working toward getting back to running!

My goal is to take more fitness classes! I find that the more I enjoy a workout, the more effort I put into it/the greater the reward I take away from it. I consistently find myself having fun and being motivated by others around me when I exercise in a class setting. I’m excited to get back into spinning and Zumba, and try some strength/core conditioning sessions at my gym!

  31. Kanoelani on October 4, 2012 at 1:30 pm

My fitness goal is to lose weight. I’m on kind of a weight loss journey & have already lost… 71 lbs! I have a way to go but I continue on my journey & pushing myself :-). I also would like to try a Tabata workout & yoga. I see yours but am a little scared of Tabata & yoga too… I’m gonna try though ๐Ÿ™‚ And I also already follow you on Facebook ๐Ÿ™‚

  37. Laura on October 4, 2012 at 1:33 pm

My fitness goal is to exercise consistently enough in order to make it a habit that I stick with!

  38. Rachel on October 4, 2012 at 1:34 pm

My current fitness goals include being more consistent with my workouts and much more aware of the food I intake throughout the day- I am hoping to lose between 5-10 pounds. I have a feeling this device would help me so much!

  39. Michelle on October 4, 2012 at 1:34 pm

My current fitness goal is also to increase lean body mass! Until recently I pretty much did just cardio because I’m 5’1 and didn’t want to look like a beefcake lol! I started reading your blog and realized I had it all wrong- doing just cardio doesn’t change your body! Also I am no longer afraid of being “bulky” ๐Ÿ™‚

Ps I already like you on FB!

  40. Tara on October 4, 2012 at 1:34 pm

My current fitness goals: to continue losing weight (dropping the fat, increasing lean muscle), and to increase my endurance. I hate running distance, but I really want to run a 1/2 marathon once just to challenge myself.

  41. Hanne on October 4, 2012 at 1:35 pm

My goal is to gain strength, particularly in the arms/upper back/chest – I’m in great cardio shape, and my legs and abs are always strong, but I’ve been slacking on the upper body strength workouts lately!

  42. Tara on October 4, 2012 at 1:35 pm

I ‘like’ you on Facebook too!

  45. Laura on October 4, 2012 at 1:36 pm

That little device looks so sweet! I just ran my first half marathon, so my current fitness goal is to train for my next half and beat my time. I’d also like to tone up all over.

  46. Laura on October 4, 2012 at 1:37 pm

I also liked you on facebook!

  47. michelle on October 4, 2012 at 1:37 pm

Hi Gina! I have been dying to try one of these forever! As a fellow instructor/trainer, I would love to use this to figure out how to fuel myself properly and keep my energy levels up on those looong teaching days, to give me a better idea of my caloric expenditure. Thanks!

  48. Shelley @ Mile High Healthy on October 4, 2012 at 1:37 pm

My fitness goal is to increase strength. I’m having a hard time making the leap from 25lb to 27.5lb bicep curls and am hoping to be able to consistently do at least 1 set of 12 in my workouts by the end of the month. I would also like to increase my overall lean mass as well.

  49. Beks on October 4, 2012 at 1:38 pm

My current fitness goal is to finish Jamie Eason’s LiveFit Trainer.
