Reader Review: BodyMedia Fit giveaway-ENDED

I’m kind of obsessed with fitness gadgets.

Run

Not really in the sense that I own a ton of them, but they fascinate me. For some, I can never get over how ridiculous (or inappropriate?) they are:

P39089BSource

and others, I watch and notice other runners or gym-goers using them before doing my own research and potentially committing to a purchase.

A couple of the things I thoroughly watched and researched before biting the bullet and getting my own: the iPod (it scared me for a long time, as does most technology, but it’s so much more useful and user-friendly than I imagined), the heart rate monitor (I use my Polar for almost every workout) and the Garmin for running.

I’m the same way with popular fitness DVDs. Even if I don’t commit to the workout or follow the specified plan, I enjoy watching them occasionally to get new moves for my classes and personal workouts. Some of the best I’ve tried: Physique 57, Insanity, Zumba, Shiva Rea and TurboFire.ย

The first time I did TurboFire, I couldn’t help but wonder what the heck some of the participants were wearing on their arms.

It wasn’t a heart rate monitor or iPod, so after a quick Google search, I found something similar:

A BodyMedia Fit device.

So what is it?

A device that assists with meeting fitness goals. You wear the armband throughout your day – it tracks how many calories you burn, how many steps you take, when you were most active and how much sleep you get. You can send this data to a computer or smartphone, enter what you eat and set goals. The activity manager keeps you on track with specific feedback about your progress.

Here’s an idea of what the dashboard looks like:

Bodymedia

You do have to have a subscription to access the dashboard ($6.95/month and first 3 months are free).

Anyway, when I first found out about it, I was excited to eventually add one to my collection, but after I became pregnant and wasn’t trying to reach any new fitness goals, I didn’t think it was necessary.

BodyMedia recently offered to send me one to try, but instead I thought it would be fun to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive their choice between the wireless device (which uses Bluetooth capabilities to transport data to your computer)

Wireless

or the Core (which connects to the computer via USB).

Core

This giveaway has ended!

Congratulations to the lucky winner:

(I did a random number generator for the page the winner would be on, then the comment on that page- so page 13, comment 11)

Since I didn’t hear from this giveaway winner in two weeks, I picked a new winner via Facebook challenge. (10/21)

Congrats, girl! Send me your info (fitnessista at gmail dot com) and I’ll send it along to the BodyMedia fairy ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you again to everyone for entering! Stay tuned for lots of awesome giveaways.

xoxo

My goal is to vary my workouts more. I’ve been taking the same fitness classes at the same times on the same days of the week for years. It’s time to mix it up!

Hi! I have never heard of this device before but would love to own one! My current fitness goal is to trim body fat and lose 10 lbs (I am getting married in a year and want to be in my best shape!).

Also I am already a fan of The Fitnessista on facebook ๐Ÿ™‚

This is my most stressful time of year so my goal is to maintain my running routine for the next 5 weeks and then kicking it up a notch with strength training.

  4. Ryan S. on October 4, 2012 at 3:10 pm

Right now, my goal is just to lose weight. I eventually want to get back to marathon training, and will once the new year rolls around. In the meantime, I just want to drop weight in preparation for that. I am doing a mix of strength and cardio.

  5. Lyndsay on October 4, 2012 at 3:11 pm

My current fitness goal is to achieve better flexibility with more yoga, but also achieve a leaner look using more body weight than free weights or machines. (My other goal is to learn better grammer because that was the longest sentence ever! ๐Ÿ™‚ )

  6. Tracey on October 4, 2012 at 3:11 pm

I just created my own fitness schedule for the next 12 weeks, incorporating weight sessions with runs. By slowly increasing my weekly mileage, my ultimate goal is to run a 15K!

My fitness goal is to increase strength and decrease bodyfat. I’ve been strength training with a trainer since last November (I switched trainers in April of this year) and have seen changes in my body that I never thought were possible. I have never felt this good inside and out and would really like to continue on a path of becoming stronger not only physically but mentally as well. I think this device would be amazing to have as part of my training program to be able to fine tune my workouts even more so that I am getting the most out of them that I possibly can.

I’m already fan of the Fitnessista on facebook! ๐Ÿ™‚

Cool giveaway! Ive wanted to check these out for a while. My current fitness goal is to get back to strength training and trim down the extra squishy I’ve got going on. I’m about to run my first half-marathon on Sunday, and although I’ve slimmed down and loved the past months of running, I’m definitely ready for the burn and ache of serious strength training. I’d love the bodymedia band to keep me in check while I cut back on the amount of cardio in my routine.

  20. Shannon on October 4, 2012 at 3:15 pm

My current goal is to reduce my body fat percentage, that is, lose some of the junk in my trunk.

  21. Katie B on October 4, 2012 at 3:15 pm

I started Medical School about 2 months ago and because of the amount of studying and lab time haven’t been able to get to the gym as much and stress eating has definitely started :/ My current fitness goal is to try to maintain and hopefully lose a few pounds by eating healthier and finding time to fit in short high caloric burn cardio. This gadget would be an awesome win because it will help me keep track of everything without me having to think about it so much because my brain is at capacity right now. Also, liked you on facebook!!

Yesterday, I tried to do a pull-up on one of those doorway pull-up bars….and failed completely. I couldn’t even crank out one!! I only managed to give myself a headache. A few years ago, I was in the best shape of my life, I was at my lowest weight ever and had lost a total of 55 pounds since college. I felt strong, could run 30 minutes without stopping (a big goal for me) and enjoyed doing some form of fitness nearly every day. I also felt like I could manage my stress well, which was a big deal for someone like me who tends to internalize their stress…and then get hives later when it all gets to be too much! At that time I could easily crank out 2-3 pull-ups on that bar without breaking a sweat or giving myself an aneurysm. Fast forward to 3 years later, I rarely work out, and while I haven’t ballooned up to the weight I was before, I can see that I have no muscle tone whatsoever and that I tire very easily. I have really let the demands of other important and valuable pursuits convince me that I don’t have time to exercise…but without exercising, I know I can’t expect to be the responsible wife, supportive friend, and active community member that I want to be!! Like most women, I spend most of my time doing things for other people, not for myself. But exercise is something that helps me to be the best version of myself, and therefore accomplish all the other goals I have in my life that affect the ones I love. So my goal is to make fitness a priority in my life again-to stick it right up there at the top with my other life roles, and remember that it is the key to keeping me healthy, calm, and focused!!

My fitness goal is to stretch and work on my flexibility. I am horrible about not stretching after running and strength training. I am hoping to start back with yoga and pilates to help me reach my goal.

  29. Lauren on October 4, 2012 at 3:17 pm

Definitely trying to increase strength and muscle definition (especially in my arms / shoulders). I’m in the middle of the ChaLean Extreme workout series and it’s great. You’re supposed to lift as heavy as possible for a lower number of reps to really increase strength, and since it’s Chalene Johnson all the videos are really fun and motivating. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a video program for strength!

I’m recovering from a back injury and am so ready to get back into shape. Lose the fat that I put on from not being able to exercise and get my muscle tone back. Great giveaway. Thank you.

  32. Lindsay on October 4, 2012 at 3:18 pm

My current goals are to continue exersizing. I have A LOT of weight to lose. (like over 100+lbs alot) and i’m soo determined to lose it all! Basically if I don’t lose the weight my next step is surgery and I REALLY DON’T want to go that route. I don’t have any health related issues and in my mind I feel like, FOR ME, surgery is taking the easy way out. I did this to myself and now it is time to take control of my life!!

I’ve been looking at this type of gadget for awhile now but sadly the hubby is unemployed so thats not even on my radar for purchasing anytime soon. I think if I had one of these it would help me to push further in my exersize goals and help keep track and monitor my food/calorie intake as well. I’ve been trying to take more steps during the work day by parking in the very back of the lot and taking the long way to the bathroom and cafeteria. I currently use this free pedometer i got from subway that is total garbage and totally inaccurate, but hey gotta make due with what you have!!!

thanks for the opportunity! awesome giveaway!!

My goal is to get back on track regarding healthy eating and decreasing body fat percentage – a combo of vacation and lots of work events has derailed my normally good eating/exercise habits.

My fitness goal is to add back in some cardio which I abandoned during the summer months. My energy levels will really benefit from the extra exertion. This, in combination with clean eats, will get me to where I want to be and feel.

Oooh, I would kill for the core one – I had a FitBit for awhile, but couldn’t wear it at work b/c I can’t have stuff that works over wireless. Plus then I put it through the washer so it didn’t work so great after that.

I’m working on my sleep and my workouts – getting more consistent with both. I’m thinking something techy might help, because then i’m looking at SCIENCE. Not just….. you know. My favorite shorts are in the wash and I just figured out “She’s All That” is a Netflix “Instant” viewing option.

Oh wow this looks like such a fun toy! My current fitness goal is to slowly start increasing the intensity of my workouts after taking some time off. I’d like to work on building my endurance and strength without pushing my body too hard like I did before.

My fitness goal for this month is to do something every day for my health! I’m a college student so the craziness of classes and work has been getting in the way of fitness, and I am determined to stop that pattern. I made a workout calendar for October, inspired by yours ๐Ÿ™‚ Some days are just 20 minutes of gentle yoga, but I want to do at least something small every day.

Thanks for your tips and workouts, I am inspired every day here! The BodyMedia Fit looks amazing…I have been wanting one but they’re a little too pricey for my college budget ๐Ÿ™‚
