Reader Review: BodyMedia Fit giveaway-ENDED

I’m kind of obsessed with fitness gadgets.

Run

Not really in the sense that I own a ton of them, but they fascinate me. For some, I can never get over how ridiculous (or inappropriate?) they are:

and others, I watch and notice other runners or gym-goers using them before doing my own research and potentially committing to a purchase.

A couple of the things I thoroughly watched and researched before biting the bullet and getting my own: the iPod (it scared me for a long time, as does most technology, but it’s so much more useful and user-friendly than I imagined), the heart rate monitor (I use my Polar for almost every workout) and the Garmin for running.

I’m the same way with popular fitness DVDs. Even if I don’t commit to the workout or follow the specified plan, I enjoy watching them occasionally to get new moves for my classes and personal workouts. Some of the best I’ve tried: Physique 57, Insanity, Zumba, Shiva Rea and TurboFire.ย

The first time I did TurboFire, I couldn’t help but wonder what the heck some of the participants were wearing on their arms.

It wasn’t a heart rate monitor or iPod, so after a quick Google search, I found something similar:

A BodyMedia Fit device.

So what is it?

A device that assists with meeting fitness goals. You wear the armband throughout your day – it tracks how many calories you burn, how many steps you take, when you were most active and how much sleep you get. You can send this data to a computer or smartphone, enter what you eat and set goals. The activity manager keeps you on track with specific feedback about your progress.

Here’s an idea of what the dashboard looks like:

Bodymedia

You do have to have a subscription to access the dashboard ($6.95/month and first 3 months are free).

Anyway, when I first found out about it, I was excited to eventually add one to my collection, but after I became pregnant and wasn’t trying to reach any new fitness goals, I didn’t think it was necessary.

BodyMedia recently offered to send me one to try, but instead I thought it would be fun to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive their choice between the wireless device (which uses Bluetooth capabilities to transport data to your computer)

Wireless

or the Core (which connects to the computer via USB).

Core

This giveaway has ended!

Congratulations to the lucky winner:

(I did a random number generator for the page the winner would be on, then the comment on that page- so page 13, comment 11)

Since I didn’t hear from this giveaway winner in two weeks, I picked a new winner via Facebook challenge. (10/21)

Congrats, girl! Send me your info (fitnessista at gmail dot com) and I’ll send it along to the BodyMedia fairy ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you again to everyone for entering! Stay tuned for lots of awesome giveaways.

xoxo

My husband deployed to Afghanistan 2 years ago and to keep myself sane I really got into fitness and running. I was really proud of myself because I was able to get my vim from obese to the normal range! My husband and I wanted to train together to run our first half marathons, but I got pregnant the month he came home! Since my training was put on hold, I’m now ready to start again.

  24. Jessica on October 4, 2012 at 9:46 pm

I recently had a BodPod assessment done, and my bodyfat percentage was 31%. That was 6 weeks ago and when I was reassessed last week, I’ve lost 5 lbs of bodyfat, which is awesome! I would use the BodyMedia armband to help with the next 5 lbs.

Thanks Gina, for this amazing blog – I love it! ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. Anna on October 4, 2012 at 9:56 pm

I want to finish losing the baby fat and get stronger and leaner than ever!

  33. Samantha on October 4, 2012 at 9:56 pm

My goal is to go further than I think I can. So often, in yoga class for instance, the teacher will push me deeper into a pose and I discover that I was holding back. It makes me wonder, in what other aspects am i holding back? So excited to find out!

  34. Melissa on October 4, 2012 at 9:57 pm

My goal is to lose this excess fat but to stay muscular and healthy at the same time

  35. Samantha on October 4, 2012 at 9:57 pm

I love you on Facebook ;D

  36. kristen @ verbs and vignettes on October 4, 2012 at 9:57 pm

hmmmmm. my main fitness goal, for something like this, would be to actually see how many calories i use on a given day. i understand the different formulas and calculations, but since i think i did some damage to my metabolism when i was younger, i always wonder. i considered getting a different monitor like this. they seem so fascinating!

overall goal, like i’m sure a thousand other comments, would be to lose my last few pounds. i’ve been up and down for months, and i’m getting a bit sick of it. i’m ready to stay at a happy weight forever.

  37. Brittany on October 4, 2012 at 9:59 pm

My goal is to continue towards my weight loss goal. I have lost 27 pounds so far this year, but it has been quite the struggle. With my insane work schedule as a PhD student, even sleep is a privilege. Making health a priority has really changed my life!

  38. Dory on October 4, 2012 at 10:00 pm

To build more lean muscle mass also! I need to be hitting the weights more. And also training for my race in a month.

my current fitness goal is to lose a few pounds of fat (while continuing to strength train), but to do this responsibly and slowly for lasting results– none of this crash diet stuff anymore!

  42. Sara leptuch on October 4, 2012 at 10:09 pm

I want to get more lean muscle too! My other goal is 5 pull ups and 50 “real” pushups.

My fitness goal this year is to do an honest-to-goodness real pull-up. It’s going to happen!

  47. Shelly on October 4, 2012 at 10:15 pm

Consistently making it to the gym 5 times a week!

  48. Amy M. on October 4, 2012 at 10:17 pm

This device is perfect for me since I do keep track of the calories I consume, but I definitely have trouble with accurately counting the amount of calories I burn. I love the idea of this!

My current fitness goal is to just be consistent. I have a hard time making working out as much of a priority as other things, so I will sometimes go days or even weeks without working out and sometimes I will go every day. I just want to find and maintain a good, healthy balance!
