Reader Review: BodyMedia Fit giveaway-ENDED

I’m kind of obsessed with fitness gadgets.

Run

Not really in the sense that I own a ton of them, but they fascinate me. For some, I can never get over how ridiculous (or inappropriate?) they are:

and others, I watch and notice other runners or gym-goers using them before doing my own research and potentially committing to a purchase.

A couple of the things I thoroughly watched and researched before biting the bullet and getting my own: the iPod (it scared me for a long time, as does most technology, but it’s so much more useful and user-friendly than I imagined), the heart rate monitor (I use my Polar for almost every workout) and the Garmin for running.

I’m the same way with popular fitness DVDs. Even if I don’t commit to the workout or follow the specified plan, I enjoy watching them occasionally to get new moves for my classes and personal workouts. Some of the best I’ve tried: Physique 57, Insanity, Zumba, Shiva Rea and TurboFire.ย

The first time I did TurboFire, I couldn’t help but wonder what the heck some of the participants were wearing on their arms.

It wasn’t a heart rate monitor or iPod, so after a quick Google search, I found something similar:

A BodyMedia Fit device.

So what is it?

A device that assists with meeting fitness goals. You wear the armband throughout your day – it tracks how many calories you burn, how many steps you take, when you were most active and how much sleep you get. You can send this data to a computer or smartphone, enter what you eat and set goals. The activity manager keeps you on track with specific feedback about your progress.

Here’s an idea of what the dashboard looks like:

Bodymedia

You do have to have a subscription to access the dashboard ($6.95/month and first 3 months are free).

Anyway, when I first found out about it, I was excited to eventually add one to my collection, but after I became pregnant and wasn’t trying to reach any new fitness goals, I didn’t think it was necessary.

BodyMedia recently offered to send me one to try, but instead I thought it would be fun to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive their choice between the wireless device (which uses Bluetooth capabilities to transport data to your computer)

Wireless

or the Core (which connects to the computer via USB).

Core

This giveaway has ended!

Congratulations to the lucky winner:

(I did a random number generator for the page the winner would be on, then the comment on that page- so page 13, comment 11)

Since I didn’t hear from this giveaway winner in two weeks, I picked a new winner via Facebook challenge. (10/21)

Congrats, girl! Send me your info (fitnessista at gmail dot com) and I’ll send it along to the BodyMedia fairy ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you again to everyone for entering! Stay tuned for lots of awesome giveaways.

xoxo

Liked you on Facebook! My current fitness goal is to complete my first marathon on October 28 (ah!) but after that, I would like to work on adding more strength workouts, and returning to yoga and other fun classes.

  2. Alexis on October 4, 2012 at 12:12 pm

I’m already a facebook fan, but sharing my fitness goal anyway: Keep incorporating cardio into my routine, eventually getting up to running a 5K without stopping. I really love to lift, and will often forego cardio for some extra time with the weights … I know I need both, but I enjoy lifting so much more. I think a tool like this would be perfect for me to be able to prove to myself, “hey, you really need to do some cardio according to your numbers today.” Can’t argue with that!

  5. Aneida on October 4, 2012 at 12:13 pm

My goal right now is to drop some lb.’s to get my body healthy and ready for a bun in the oven. I’m so excited to start a family with my husband but feel like I want to get in shape first so that I can give myself and baby a great shot at a healthy pregnancy!

My goal is to really focus on my eats. Exercise isn’t the problem.. I love to do it. But the eating is really where I struggle. This would be helpful to track all of that and help motivate by seeing calculated results!

  17. Sarabell on October 4, 2012 at 12:15 pm

I am pregnant, so my current fitness goal is to remain active and eat healthy to slowly increase my weight within normal limits… but afterwards, it’ll be to lose!

  18. Corey on October 4, 2012 at 12:15 pm

I am really trying to build strength and get some muscle definition. I also have about 5 lbs to get to my goal weight and it has been slowly getting there so this would be super helpful!

  19. Sarabell on October 4, 2012 at 12:16 pm

    I’m already a Facebook fan!

  20. Ali on October 4, 2012 at 12:16 pm

My fitness goal is to increase my strength to help with recurring injuries. As an ex-athlete I have a lot of injuries that keep acting up and I know that building strength will only help!

  21. Heather (Heather's Dish) on October 4, 2012 at 12:16 pm

i have to say my goal is about the same – increase lean muscle mass, but also increase cardiovascular endurance!

  22. Liz on October 4, 2012 at 12:16 pm

At this point my goal is more getting into shape and making sure I’m doing the right exercises so I can have a lofty goal of a half-marathon one day. Or you know…move beyond just reading healthy living blogs and walking a few miles a week ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. Alicia on October 4, 2012 at 12:17 pm

To improve strength training. I have been running a lot and doing little else. I know that lifting weights will help improve my running!

  24. Liz on October 4, 2012 at 12:17 pm

My goal is to decrease body fat by increasing muscle mass.

  25. Natalie on October 4, 2012 at 12:17 pm

Same as you, Gina… increase lean body mass! I’m already very fit and lean, I just want some more power since I’m training for my first triathlon!

  26. Stephanie @ Legally Blinde on October 4, 2012 at 12:17 pm

Wow that seems like a really useful device! I used to belong to my local rec center, but I just recently joined the gym associated with my school because I was really missing group exercise classes. So my goal is to get into a steady habit of going to classes, and also trying out new classes which might take me out of my comfort zone. Thanks for this nice giveaway, Gina!

  27. Alicia on October 4, 2012 at 12:17 pm

    I like you on Facebook!

  28. Lindsey on October 4, 2012 at 12:17 pm

My current fitness goal is to build strength in my core and legs. The majority of my workouts are running so I’ve just started Crossfit to switch it up a bit.

  29. Molly on October 4, 2012 at 12:18 pm

Add in more cardio to my workout routine that is mostly yoga and pilates and some strength training.

  30. Lindsey on October 4, 2012 at 12:18 pm

And I already like you on Facebook.

  31. Susan on October 4, 2012 at 12:18 pm

My current goal is to increase core strength. It’s my least favorite area to work on and, therefore, my weakest!

  32. Stephanie @ Legally Blinde on October 4, 2012 at 12:18 pm

I already “liked” you on Facebook ๐Ÿ™‚

  33. lisa on October 4, 2012 at 12:18 pm

OOOOOOhhhhh, I”ve been dying to try one of these! I’ve seen some reviews on other blogs and I would love to know all of the handy dandy info it provides!

My fitness goal is to add some lean body mass and lose some fat.
I’m in a forever struggle to lean out. I blame it on my slowing metabolism (i’m 29) and the fact that I have 2 kids… but really it’s my sweet tooth’s fault!

  34. Tayla @ She'll Be Free on October 4, 2012 at 12:18 pm

My current fitness goal is to also increase my lean body mass and build muscle. I have been working hard in the gym and with my diet so I just want to keep up with all my good work!

  35. Stacey on October 4, 2012 at 12:18 pm

  36. virginia c on October 4, 2012 at 12:18 pm

my fitness goals are to finish what I’ve started. I started at 268 pounds after giving birth to my first child in Feb of 2010. before January i had already lost 60 pounds. i felt strong and fit! i even motivated some of my close friends n family to start working out n lose weight. i am so happy i was able to help my nephew become a runner. now he is a more active participant in his P.E. class. As for me, i’ve managed to keep 60 pounds off with healthy eating n exercise. my goal is to tone up and drop more weight to finally reach 140 in the coming months. ๐Ÿ™‚

  37. Zana on October 4, 2012 at 12:19 pm

  42. Kelly Katheryn on October 4, 2012 at 12:19 pm

My current fitness goal is to transition back into running. I got a stress fracture the week before my fourth half marathon. So after taking 5 weeks off of running (and wearing a boot!), I’ve begun easing back into it. The BodyMedia would be a neat addition to help me monitor my workouts!
And I’ve only been a huge, huge fan of Fitnessista since the Valdosta days ๐Ÿ™‚

  43. Kelli C on October 4, 2012 at 12:19 pm

I am 11 weeks pregnant so my goal is to stay active! This gadget would help me make sure my heart rate stays in a safe range and I’m getting enough calories for this growing Baby Bean!!

  44. Kelly Katheryn on October 4, 2012 at 12:19 pm

I’m also a fan on FB.

  45. Tami on October 4, 2012 at 12:20 pm

I’ve slipped in the whole healthy living lifestyle in the past few months and in turn have gained some weight. So my goal is to get back to a healthy state- eating right and movin this bod!

  46. Tayla @ She'll Be Free on October 4, 2012 at 12:20 pm

  48. jessica on October 4, 2012 at 12:20 pm

My current goal is to lose these last ten stubborn pounds before my wedding in May (by switching up my workouts. . . I’m in a fitness rut)!

  49. Natassia on October 4, 2012 at 12:20 pm

My current goal is run a 1/2 marathon. I’ve had 3 knee surgeries so that’s a pretty big deal for me.

  50. Krysta on October 4, 2012 at 12:20 pm

Ok this little device looks/sounds awesome! My current health goal is to get back to making fitness a regular priority in my life. After back surgery last summer I’ve been struggling to regulary incorporate fitness into my life. Beyond that I would love to up the lean muscle and build my cardio endurance back up.
