Treadmill total toaster workout

Hi! How’s your morning going? Kind of a huge fan of this shorter week; the weekend is almost already here 😉

Still going strong: the green juice and green tea combo.

Green juice and green tea 1 of 1

(Juice with apple, spinach, cucumber, lemon, mint and ginger. The mint makes it taste so cooling and refreshing!)

Can’t really say the same about ye ol’ juicer. I bought it from my friend Heather, I think six years ago (?!) and it has been an AMAZING juicer. Sadly, I think it’s reached the end of its lifetime. We’ve got a leaker, friends.

Juicer 1 of 1

I started to take it apart and rinse the pieces and I noticed juice had been leaking around the sides. I’m going to play with it today and see if it’s something with the seal, but if not, it might be time to scope out new juicers. It’s been a great one, that’s for sure! I may get another Jack LaLanne or see what Costco has in stock. Let me know if you have an awesome juicer you love!

Zumba last night was amaaaazing. I felt kind of lazy all day and had a hard time getting my mojo going, and Zumba totally turned it around. I’m a huge believer that activity begets activity; it’s incredible what a little shaking will do. I felt inspired and energized after Livi went to bed to crank out the to-do list I’d neglected during the day. I think it may be time to go back to short morning walks with Bella or a spin ride. It wakes my brain up 😉

Zumba gear 1 of 1

I often wonder how many fitness instructors out there are also introverted. When I teach, it’s almost like I’m a different person for a little while. I’m also a huge believer in the “fake it til you FEEL it” mentality. Even though I love teaching 99.97% of the time, there are certainly days where I feel blah and not on my “A” game. When I walk in the door, smile, convince myself to give it everything I’ve got, and after the warmup, I feel amazing again.

Any fellow introverted fitness instructors? Any fellow introverts who have to step out of their shell for their job (like giving presentations, teaching others, etc)? I’d love to hear about your experience! Any extroverted friends who would rather eat a shoe than teach a fitness class? 😉

Hope you have a wonderful morning <3

xoxo

NEW WORKOUT: Treadmill total toaster. This is intended to be completed in blocks, based on the following pace guidelines: base pace (an easy and maintainable walk, jog or run), tempo (increased pace; RPE 7-8. More challenging to maintain) and SPRINT (your personal fastest speed; RPE 8-9). As always, check with a doc before making any fitness changes. Honor your body and modify as needed. If you would prefer to walk the entire time instead of run, just add in incline instead of speed for your push and sprint pace, so you’d be doing heavy hills instead of sprints. Let me know if you give it a whirl <3

Friendly squat reminder! <3

Pinning this one immediately! Love the change of pace – total boredom buster.

  2. Britt@MyOwnBalance on September 3, 2014 at 8:45 am

I completely agree that activity begets activity!

I am a huge introvert and very shy. I definitely need to fake it sometimes! When I used to teach classes I would get so so nervous before class but I had to just go up there and smile and do my best. I don’t know why I decided to become a litigator because the stress of having to publicly speak in a courtroom in front of a judge was almost more than I can handle! Oh well, I guess it’s good for me!!

  3. Jessica on September 3, 2014 at 8:46 am

I’m a teacher and have no problem standing up in front of my kids – but HATE talking in front of fellow teachers or parents!

When I get home I crave quiet alone time. I often turn the radio off in my car and just sit in silence on the way home – I guess this helps balance out my introverted-ness!

    • Katie on September 3, 2014 at 9:31 am

I was the same way when I taught middle school. Kids=no problem, adults=scary!! What’s weird is that even though I got a lot of (forced) practice speaking in front of colleagues, it never really got easier.

      • ali on September 3, 2014 at 9:39 am

I’m the opposite! Kids freak me out nut I am fine teaching college courses.

      • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:33 am

i think that’s how i would feel, too. i have no prob with kids, but adults freak me out

    • Carly on September 3, 2014 at 10:25 am

I was just going to write this exact thing, Jessica! I love, love teaching (high school age, though), even though I’m some what of an introvert. I definitely prefer complete quiet when I get home, and I need it!

I’m teaching adults/staff members of a University these days, and it was a much bigger leap than you would think. But, you smile and fake it til it feels pretty normal 🙂

      • Jessica on September 3, 2014 at 12:20 pm

I teach high school as well and I’m pretty comfortable with it now but I feel like adults are judging me more – or expecting me to be some sort of expert. I guess that’s a confidentlce thing.

        • Priya Mehra on September 4, 2014 at 11:03 pm

my high school english teacher was like that. none of us knew he was an introvert until he told us. he said his wife saw him teach one day and he acted so different.
he explained that for him, he had to put himself more “out there” as ateacher to relate to us seniors, and he was a hilarious, great teacher!

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:34 am

i do that after teaching every class. no radio, just silence.

  4. kristin @ W [H] A T C H on September 3, 2014 at 8:48 am

oh that looks like a killer treadmill workout!

  5. Monica on September 3, 2014 at 9:14 am

I’m not a fitness teacher, but I’ve noticed that, as an introvert, I don’t mind the teaching or performing so much – it’s the attention I get afterward that I really struggle with! If I could just perform (in my case) and then run away and hide, it would be perfect. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:33 am

      totally agree!!

  6. Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious on September 3, 2014 at 9:21 am

Activity definitely makes you want more. I couldn’t agree more! I’m a total introvert, but generally once I get comfortable with myself in a certain surrounding then in ok and open up more.

  7. Rita on September 3, 2014 at 9:28 am

My husband calls it being “selectively extroverted.” Speaking engagements, interviews and workshops are tough and require a lot of recharge time after but they’re still a lot of fun. They just aren’t what this introvert would do everyday!

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:33 am

      i like that!

  8. Julia on September 3, 2014 at 9:28 am

Trying out this treadmill workout tonight!

  9. Lindsay on September 3, 2014 at 10:03 am

Just finished this treadmill workout (whew!) followed by the band-aid arm burner and today’s squat challenge. Awesome sweatfest!

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:32 am

      great job!!

  10. LJ on September 3, 2014 at 10:06 am

I agree in the activity begets activity. When I go run in the morning I am so much more active throughout the day. (I like to take a short walk at lunch break, even if it is around the block. The fresh air invigorates me just as much as the short alone time.) Evenings are usually hectic, but I have been pretty successful at making fitness group classes an appointment and keeping it.

Hearing about your transfer to an energetic zumba teacher from an introvert gives me hope: I am an introvert but it hasn’t stopped me from hoping to make it to a fitness instructor some day. Not right now (due to other issues) but definitely some day. I have let other people convince me I can’t pull it off because I am an inrtovert, but I’d like to prove them wrong…

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:32 am

you TOTALLY can prove them wrong. quite a few of my friends (and powerhouse instructors) are also introverted. you fake it til ya make it 🙂 thanks for inspiring a lunchtime walk today. xoxo

  11. Jacquelyn @justjacq on September 3, 2014 at 10:12 am

I’m a really chatty introvert so most people think I’m extroverted and take it personally when I get quiet. I think it’s also because I strongly follow the fake it till you make it mantra so even though I’m totally uncomfortable on the inside, on the outside I come across really outgoing. Also I like that you said “honor your moody” hehe I giggled.

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:31 am

such a typo fail, but still kind of worked? haha

      • Jacquelyn on September 3, 2014 at 1:08 pm

I honor my moody everyday all day

        • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 5:14 pm

          hahaha same 🙂

  12. Erin @ Her Heartland Soul on September 3, 2014 at 10:17 am

Oh no I hope you can fix your juicer! If not, for what it’s worth, I use the Magimix juicer attachment on top of my food processor and love it.

  13. Bree on September 3, 2014 at 10:17 am

My mom has the Bullet juicer and she loves it. I have the Ninja Master Prep Pro and let me tell you…it is everyyyythiiiing! I think I mostly like it because it can blend, chop, juice, etc. Its a bang for for the buck in my opinion. 🙂

  14. Jen on September 3, 2014 at 10:30 am

i feel like i’m becoming more of an introvert in my old age 😉 i used to find crowds of people energizing, and now… well, i guess they are still energizing, i just feel tired more quickly!

i read this post as i was getting ready to teach a class in an hour, and i’ve been so exhausted this week, not sure why! but you’re right, as soon as i get started, my energy picks up!

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:30 am

      so true! xox

  15. alicia on September 3, 2014 at 10:45 am

I have a Hurom which I’m sure you’ve heard about. Obviously it’s awesome (and very expensive) but for as much as you juice, I think it’d be totally worth it. Just a warning as well…Costco does carry it (online I believe) but they are not an authorized dealer of it…Make sure you check Hurom’s website first because you want that warranty to be honored (10 year on the motor I believe).

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:30 am

amazing! it’s been on my juicer dream list for years so maybe i need to bite the bullet. thanks for the heads up on the warranty too!

  16. Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries on September 3, 2014 at 10:57 am

The introverted vs. extroverted personality while teaching thing is intriguing to me. I’m a psychology major after all. 😉 I am slightly more extroverted but still have a huge chunk of introverted in me too. (Like, any personality test I take is like 60% extroverted/40% introverted or something really close like that.) So, I can relate to what you’re saying. This is why I’m a total believer in those endorphins! They always wake me right up and make me feel awesome. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:29 am

even though rest days are important, i feel so much happier and more energetic on the days that i move

  17. Sam @ PancakeWarriors on September 3, 2014 at 11:07 am

I taught Zumba and boot camp for a few years (I still teach spin) and I became a different person because of it!. It helped me become a bit braver in other public settings (giving speeches, interviewing for jobs, meeting new folks). I figured if I can shake my butt for a bunch of strangers and ask them to follow me – I better have some confidence 🙂 That mentality has helped me a ton in my life outside of the gym and I definitely don’t regret it! I most certainly went from the introverted back of the room participant to all eyes on me instructor in less than a year. But that’s what happens when you find something you love I guess 🙂

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:29 am

i totally agree that teaching fitness made me braver in other aspects and it makes a huge difference when you love it so much

  18. Emma @ Life's A Runner on September 3, 2014 at 11:18 am

It is SO SO true that activity –> more activity + energy. It doesn’t matter how great of a groove I get into with running / working out, as soon as I take a few days off my motivation absolutely disappears. And then magically returns as soon as I get going again! What a concept, hey? That workout looks reeeallly intense, in a great way of course. 🙂 I will definitely give it a try STAT.

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:28 am

let me know if you give it a try! 🙂 xo

  19. Deanna on September 3, 2014 at 11:23 am

I’m totally introverted, but I work in Sales and Marketing and regularly give presentations to large groups of people. I was struggling for a bit earlier this year because I HATE small talk, and it seemed like that’s all I was doing and not getting anywhere. Then I read Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World the Can’t Stop Talking. It was amazing. Seriously, I can not recommend the book enough. Or at the very least, the author’s TED talk.

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 11:28 am

i think i have it downloaded on my kindle, but need to actually read it!

    • Kara on September 3, 2014 at 1:04 pm

I’m reading that book right now. It’s giving me great insight on my introverted hubby, as well as my own introverted-leaning ways. I wish I would have read it years ago!

    • Sachi on September 3, 2014 at 4:56 pm

I read Quiet as well and found it so enlightening! Definitely second that recommendation! It gave me a much better understanding of myself and what it means to be an introvert in terms of how our brains work and how we process our environments.

I’ve been a personal trainer for a few years and recently started as an indoor cycling instructor, which has definitely brought my fear of public speaking to the forefront. I’ve only done a few classes so far but am finding that I’m not crazy about it, at least not yet. And I can’t tell if I’m not into it because it’s just unfamiliar territory, or because it’s genuinely not for me. Part of it, I think, is that most of my favorite cycling teachers are pretty peppy and high energy and I don’t have that same energy myself. Even though I’ve gotten decent feedback, I still definitely feel like I’m in total “faking it”-mode. Gonna give it a few months to see how it goes…

    • Emily on September 3, 2014 at 4:57 pm

Definitely agree about this book! It made me appreciate the degree to which my introversion affects my engagement with the world and to appreciate its merits and figure out to adapt to the challenges it can pose. I cannot say enough good things about Susan Cain!

    • Masala Girl on September 4, 2014 at 11:09 pm

I have been trying all of your treadmill workouts lately (thanks to the revamp) and I must say they totally help kill the boredom and make the workout amazing, I always feel great after and I look forward to running! I have a blendtec and so i thought I’d just make smoothies and be fine, but I’ve been really wanting a juicer, I can’t wait to read all of the comments! Plus hear your feedback and thoughts as well! cheers.

I absolutely love the Breville compact juice extractor! It’s the only juicer I’ve used, but I’ve had it for almost a year and I haven’t found any problems. I love that it’s so easy to deconstruct and toss in the dishwasher, too. 🙂

  25. Christa @ Living Unablanced on September 3, 2014 at 1:41 pm

I’m definitely an introvert, but have no problem talking to executives about their marketing strategy (what I do for a living). I think when you’re confident about your knowledge in the subject matter and passionate about what you’re talking about, the shyness goes away 🙂

  26. Amanda on September 3, 2014 at 2:08 pm

In college I used to be a total extravert! But now that I am older I feel much more introverted =). I like nights at home with the family, I’ve become an extreme minimalist (decluttering = therapy), and I like to work out and eat healthy for fun rather than for a crazy diet.

I need a juicer! Holla at cha girl when you get feedback on which one is best to buy!!

  27. Emily on September 3, 2014 at 2:10 pm

Not quite the same but I waited tables at The Melting Pot all through college. Not only do you have to be friendly enough to serve tables in general, but there you actually spend a ton of time with each guest, small-talking while you make their cheese tableside, explaining how to properly cook the entree items, etc. I was SUPER shy when I started working there as a hostess, and even though I despised waiting tables, it was SUCH a great tool for teaching me to be more comfortable talking to people I don’t know!

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 5:13 pm

that is awesome! and that chocolate fondue with peanut butter… no words 😉

  28. mary on September 3, 2014 at 2:13 pm

Instead of a new juicer, I would blend the ingredients in your Vitamix and then strain it through a fine sieve, cheesecloth, nut milk bag or a coffee press. No dis-assembly, just a quick rinse of two vessels.

I’ll try it here with my Blendtec and coffee press sometime.

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 5:12 pm

does it taste the same for the most part? i have some cheesecloth and will give it a try tomorrow

      • mary on September 3, 2014 at 8:37 pm

I don’t know, I don’t have the ingredients to try it here! lol. Let me know how it comes out, if you try it first! It might be a big flop, I’m not sure.

  29. Sally on September 3, 2014 at 2:15 pm

This reminds me a lot of the Orange Theory workouts! It will be a good substitute since we don’t have one where I live yet.

    Hi!

I love your blog and just completed your treadmill workout, it was awesome! It’s crazy how much faster my average speed is when I complete an interval workout compared to just 30 straight minutes on the treadmill. I could never just set the treadmill at 7.5mph and go for 30 minutes. Thanks for the workout! Also, not that it really matters, but I noticed you are missing minute 6-7on the workout. I just completed base pace for two minutes instead of one . Just thought I’d point it out in case it was an easy fix for you to make 🙂

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 5:11 pm

sorry, i didn’t add it because i said “rest for one minute” – hope it was still clear for you, and so happy you liked it! xo

I did this treadmill workout at lunch…its a good one! It takes some mental stamina to get through that last 5 minutes at tempo pace!

  34. char eats greens on September 3, 2014 at 3:32 pm

It’s nice to hear that you’re an introvert, but still teach classes with a room full of people (I’m hugely an introvert too!) – so there’s hope for me speaking in front of others. In school last year, I had to give a 30 min nutrition presentation, and the only way I got through it was aaaaa looooot of practicing at home on my husband. He was SUCH an amazing motivator for me!! And boy, that treadmill toaster really does sound toasty. I pinned it 😉

  35. Laura B @ FitMamaLove on September 3, 2014 at 4:10 pm

I fall somewhere between introvert and extrovert. Teaching my first Pilates class was terrifying and I was only leading a small portion of it, not the whole class. Now I’m perfectly comfortable in front of my own class, but still get nervous when I sub for someone else. I definitely have days when I need to fake it and I always wonder if the class notices. I can start out a class having no idea how I’m possibly going to make it through the whole thing, but then 20 min in, I’m feeling good again.

  36. Andrea B. on September 3, 2014 at 4:24 pm

awesome workout! It reminds me of my orange theory class blocks, which I love because they make the time fly by.

I’m a complete introvert, but I just started working as an attorney which requires a lot of mingling–especially as a summer associate where you have to go to cocktail parties all the time. In order to ease my anxiety and make it less daunting, I always tell myself not to think about how overwhelming the whole party is, but to just focus on building relationships with the people that I interact with. Even if I don’t manage to shake everyone’s hand, the conversations I do have are meaningful and tend to me much more long-lasting and genuine!

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 5:10 pm

that’s totally what i based it on. love OTF 🙂

  37. Sara on September 3, 2014 at 4:37 pm

Can’t wait to do this one tomorrow at the gym as it’s going to be waaay too hot to run outside! This might be a dumb question, but what does “push pace” mean?

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 5:09 pm

it’s a challenging pace for you. not a sprint, but something that would be challenging but doable to maintain

      • Sara on September 3, 2014 at 8:53 pm

        Thanks!

  38. em on September 3, 2014 at 5:58 pm

You should read the book Quiet by Susan Cain if you haven’t already. I am an introvert, am reading it now, and I’m obsessed. I’m a teacher but I think it’s easier for me to be outgoing around children because they are so cute, eager, and forgiving!

  39. Mackenzie on September 3, 2014 at 6:18 pm

Forgive my ignorance, but is RPE the speed you set on the treadmill? Also, what kind of incline would you recommend for this workout? I usually set mine at 2 for any treadmill run and increase it if I’m doing some kind of incline workout.

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2014 at 6:20 pm

ahhh sorry i should have specified! RPE = rate of perceived exertion. this is usually on a 1-10 scale (1 is taking a nap, 10 is your personal max effort)
      i like incline 1-2.5%

      • Mackenzie on September 5, 2014 at 4:00 pm

Just wanted to let you know this workout was my motivation to hit up my hotel gym this morning after a late work event–and it was awesome!! Perfect way to start off the Friday 🙂 Have a great weekend!

OMG I am a hugely introverted fitness instructor!! Some days, I find myself teaching and thinking to myself, “What the heck are you doing up there?!” And then I forget that people know me as their trainer/fitness instructor and think I’m all bubbly out and about around town, too. And I’m obvs tots friendly in these scenarios, but def don’t have my instructor personality “on” and am actually really shy. lol #thestruggle

Okay, we are on the same wavelength or something. I have been feeling really “meh” and just got in a late workout, and feel GREAT! i love how energized I am after.
Also, I am pretty introverted. I easily revert into my own “shell” or want to be secluded in my room unless i purposefully put myself out there. I love working with people though, which is odd. For example, waitressing/hosting, leading a project, etc.

I LOVE my Breville but I also don’t use it nearly as much as I should. I don’t think it’s a huge pain to clean and it takes whole apples like a champ!

Appropriate question for me! It was my birthday on the 3rd and my husband generously bought me the JR 800 ultra juicer. I’ve had a go today and it is brilliant. The pulp comes out almost dry. It also looks like you could stretch it out and bake it into fruit strips. Has anyone ever done that? I don’t like to waste all that fruity goodness! He also bought me a massive tray of fruit from the grocers but my three little fruit bats have been demolishing it before I got a chance to get it juiced! Shouldn’t complain though!

i’ll check it out- it sounds perfect!
i’ve made fruit strips by blending berries with banana, but never with juice pulp. let me know how it turns out!

I am a total introvert instructor! I’ve taught for 10 yrs (bootcamp, step aerobics, bodypump, bodystep – rock it Les Mills sista!) but I am the most shy person without a mic on! I have to put on “special” instructor tops that then make me feel like I can “perform”. I love teaching, and I love my participants but I get home and I am happy to sit and relax on the couch. I’ve even presented at national conferences and then I’m happy to hang back. To each their own, it take a lot of energy to actually teach and act like a Ham in front of some many people 😉

I’m a fellow introverted fitness instructor, but being an instructor has definitely helped my confidence in other parts of my life! But I’m definitely still and introvert and need my alone time to recharge!
