WMOW: Walk the Plank

Hi friends! How are you?? Hope you’re having a great morning so far 🙂

This week’s Workout Move of the Week is one of my all-time faves (in a love/hate way, of course): the plank!

(I was looking for a picture of a pirate ship plank, and found that, which was awesome haha)

Some tips before you get yo plank on:

-Make sure alignment is bueno. You want a straight line from your shoulders all the way to your ankles and keep that booty in line- not dropping or up in the air.

me

-Always check with a doc before starting a new fitness or nutrition program

-If it hurts, don’t do it!
Hope you enjoy the goofy video and learn at least one new plank variation- there are a ton out there 🙂

As always, Bella steals the show 😉

How often do you work out your abs? What’s your favorite way to work your core?

Have a great day!

I don’t mean to sound stupid, but do you know any good weight training and yoga resources for beginners? I can’t afford a personal trainer and I’d like to get stronger. However, I want to do this without losing weight.

  2. Kate on January 6, 2011 at 12:36 pm

A two year supply of Sun Warrior sounds glorious. As does winning a Vita Mix. I’ve never used Open Sky before but I’m going to sign up now!

I love these inspiration boards! I think I’m going to make my own!!

  3. Jeannette on January 6, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Thank you for posting these workout videos! I find them so helpful!
Can i ask what type of dog Bella is? She is so cute!

  4. vicky on January 6, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Thanks for the vid, and the vita mix giveaway is amazing! Do you have any tips for increasing hamstring flexibility? I want to be able to do a split, and I thought it was my hip flexors that were tight but it’s actually my hamstrings. Any advice for me?? Thanks, Gina!

  5. Katie on January 6, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Planks hurt, but hurt so good !

Bella is a cutie! little superstar! Love her!!!

  6. ezzie on January 6, 2011 at 12:43 pm

    Planks > Crunches 😀
    & Bella is so adorable!

  7. Ashley on January 6, 2011 at 12:55 pm

Bella is so cute and I love planks wayy better than crunches and sit ups. The pirate picture is hilarious.

  8. Sally on January 6, 2011 at 12:56 pm

How DELICIOUS is that little Bella??? I want to keep watching the video just to watch her!

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 3:21 pm

      she’s pretty much amazing 🙂

  9. Jess (Bmore Balanced) on January 6, 2011 at 12:57 pm

I just did abs last night and today it hurts when I sneeze but it hurts so good!

I’m following you on OpenSky. I would LOVE to win a Vita-mix. My blender is terrible! I blend for a couple seconds, turn it off, shake (rock the crap out of the machine) out the air bubble, then blend some more. I have to work hard for my Green Monsters

  10. Emily on January 6, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Little Miss Bella is just too cute!

  11. Katherine: Unemployed on January 6, 2011 at 1:01 pm

omg my sister had a cat that would attack me when I tried to do any exercises on the ground. never visiting her again! (JK; I’m just bringing my mat next time)

  12. Clare @ Fitting It All In on January 6, 2011 at 1:02 pm

I just asked on my blog for some new ab moves, so this is perfect! I work my abs 2-3 times per week, but needed a little extra kick:)

And I follow you. And would love you forever if I won a vitamix!

  13. Kendall on January 6, 2011 at 1:09 pm

    That picture is amazing haha.
I love planks! 🙂 I can hold one for 2 mins so far. I am trying to keep building my way up on the minutes. I work my abs WAAYYY to much and I need to tone it down so that I have time to recover.. Added to my resolutions for the year!

Bella is so adorable too by the way.

  14. mi-an dela cruz on January 6, 2011 at 1:12 pm

i feel the same about planks..love/hate it. and i do follow you on open sky! i’ve been DREAMING of a vitamix!!!

  15. carpensm @ A Life Without Ice Cream on January 6, 2011 at 1:19 pm

The plank is my nemesis! There’s just something about it that makes me want to yell… mostly because I find it hard. I made a pact with myself a few months ago that I would do plank (and time it) at least 2x a week… because if I find something hard its probably a good sign I should do it!

  16. Christine (The Raw Project) on January 6, 2011 at 1:27 pm

That’s a great move and I try to do it with the rest of my ad exercises 5-6 times a week.

  17. April @ Crazy Fabulous Life on January 6, 2011 at 1:32 pm

My daughter says to tell you she loves your yoga mat because it’s so pink. 🙂

  18. LisaG on January 6, 2011 at 1:37 pm

You know I had rather walk the plank than do the plank. They are tough. I did a twenty minute ab workout from Shape dvd yesterday, and so sore today, ribs are on fire!

  19. Robyn @ Frugal 'n' Fit! on January 6, 2011 at 1:43 pm

Ah, the plank! So loved and hated, simultaneously! I like Bella’s hilarious contribution to this video 🙂

  20. Toronto Girl West on January 6, 2011 at 1:49 pm

Awww . . . my inspiration board looks so pretty on your blog! 🙂 Gracias for posting it!!!!

Also, super excited about the Vita-Mix giveaway. I’m going to pray that I win because I’ve been jonesing one for a while!

  21. Stefanie on January 6, 2011 at 2:01 pm

Lastely, I’ve been loving Jillian Michael’s 6 week six-pack for a nice ab workout!

  22. Michelle on January 6, 2011 at 2:01 pm

Oh man, I was laughing so hard when I saw this video – it looks like you’re trying so hard not to crack up, too, when Bella keeps bringing her monkey over to the mat. I can relate; for whatever reason, my dog thinks that whenever I bust my yoga mat out, it means that I’m in the mood to play and have my face licked. I’ve had to pause many workout videos because she’s hovering over me in bridge position or something, trying to stick her tongue in my mouth with her tail wagging frantically.

  23. Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] on January 6, 2011 at 2:05 pm

I love plank! Thx for the new variations!

  24. Mandy on January 6, 2011 at 2:19 pm

I love anything that DOESN’T involve crunches;) They get a little boring to me and there are so many innovative new ways to target those abs-like planks! I really like “Core Synergistics” video from P90X. That’s a killer hour long ab clincher and no crunches in sight!

  25. darien on January 6, 2011 at 2:29 pm

I’ve been aching for a vitamix and been a follower for awhile now! what an awesome giveaway!

  26. Maryann on January 6, 2011 at 2:29 pm

Abs are my favorite thing to work out! I always save them for the end of my workout though and have been getting lazy lately. Planks=awesome! When I first started doing them, I couldnt go more than 10 seconds without shaking.

  27. MMiller on January 6, 2011 at 2:43 pm

WOW…what an awesome gift to win! I would love to win one for my parents and brother! Love your blog Gina!

  28. Sara on January 6, 2011 at 2:50 pm

If I win, I’m thowing a smoothie party!

Plank totally helps with my yoga…thanks for the video!!

  29. Alison (Fueling for Fitness) on January 6, 2011 at 3:08 pm

if only this was available to Canadians! 🙁

  30. chelsea on January 6, 2011 at 4:21 pm

Signed up to follow you on opensky, but is there something more I need to do to follow you? I love following you’re blog, I would love following you on opensky 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 5:41 pm

      nope that’s it!

  31. Leanne (For Health's Sake) on January 6, 2011 at 4:43 pm

Oh my gosh Bella kills me! Your exercise videos are an inconveinence to her obvs because she has to wait for you to be done the workout before you’ll throw her toy! 🙂 hahaha!

But really, thanks for the varriations of planks! I’ll incorporate them into my workout this week 🙂

  32. Mary @ Bites and Bliss on January 6, 2011 at 4:50 pm

I just did planks yesterday! I remember when they used to be so super challenging to hold but years of yoga have really helped that out. 😛

  33. Erica on January 6, 2011 at 5:14 pm

Bella is soooo cute! What kind of dog is she?

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 5:41 pm

      a maltipoo

  34. christina on January 6, 2011 at 5:14 pm

she is going to town on that monkey!!

  35. Moni'sMeals on January 6, 2011 at 5:46 pm

    Great video..Bella melts my heart.:)

I also love one leg fore arm plank, woohoo.

  36. KimLivesHealthy on January 6, 2011 at 5:52 pm

Bella makes every workout video better 🙂 My mom’s maltipoo does the same thing with her toys – we say “kill it!” and she shakes it side to side like that lol

PS Love that techno song in the background!

  37. Anna on January 6, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Thank you for the video! I find it so much more helpful to see and hear what needs to be done rather than just read examples. Bella adds a nice touch too 🙂

  38. Jess - The Domestic Vegan on January 6, 2011 at 6:35 pm

    Great video!

Bella is so cute. My Mabel does the same thing to me when I’m doing mat work! She thinks it’s playtime… 🙂

  39. Alycia [Fit n Fresh] on January 6, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Seriously – Bella is so cute!! And I loved some of your plank variations, can’t wait to try them 🙂

  40. Ryane on January 6, 2011 at 7:51 pm

Dear Gina, I’m already following you on OpenSky… am I still eligible to win a Vita-Mix? Mama needs one real bad!

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 10:15 pm

yes, all followers will be entered 🙂

  41. Heather on January 6, 2011 at 8:04 pm

Hello~ Do you ever give any advice on exercising and reataining water? Do you have any experience with retaining water especially in the legs and stomach if you or sore or dehyrated? I am not really sure what is happening but would you maybe be able to help me? You seem to know alot about fitness. If yes I could let you know what is going on. I am beside myself on what to do.

    Thank you~ Heather

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 10:15 pm

      hey heather,
i’ve never had that prob but i can definitely say to watch your sodium intake and alcohol consumption- both of those can have a huge effect on water retention. if it keeps up, i’d talk to a doc for sure

  42. Elyse on January 6, 2011 at 8:22 pm

So apparently I have never watched any of your fitness videos before. For some reason I pictured your voice different… I don’t know how lol! But you have a pretty voice (in a non creepy way haha). We had to do the dolphin planks for 5 minutes straight for softball and I wanted to DIE. I want to try and get good at them again (: If you are ever in Cali I would love to have you train me!

  43. Aria on January 6, 2011 at 9:03 pm

Your video was great – you gave me some new ideas for planks! Thanks 🙂 Plus it’s always fun to watch little bella steal the show – she is too cute!!
That is awesome news about the vita-mix!! I’ve been following you on open sky since it started the whole following people thing – am I still entered in the giveaways or is it just for new people who start following you?

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 10:14 pm

yes, all followers will be included in the giveaways

  44. Suzi on January 6, 2011 at 9:04 pm

I adored Bella already but this video made me love her even more!

Have you ever tried what I call a spiderman plank? Basically you open your arms and legs up as much as possible and bend your elbows like you are in a wide pushup and hold there. It’s BRUTIAL! And obvisouly only for advanced folks.

Thanks for linking up my blog/inspiration board it was super sweet of you to do! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 10:14 pm

yup, i’ve tried it and it’s HARDCORE 🙂

  45. Dynamics on January 6, 2011 at 9:19 pm

I kept waiting for Bella to go underneath you. She is so cute. That bath did her wonders. She is beautiful.

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 10:14 pm

      she said thank you 🙂

  46. Sara (Milwaukee Kitchen) on January 6, 2011 at 11:16 pm

    More Bella workout videos!

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 11:18 pm

      hahah, i’ll tell her 🙂

  47. Mandy on January 7, 2011 at 3:31 am

Bella is such a cutie-pie! You have such amazing give-aways, I would be crazy happy if I won a Vita-Mix!

  48. Laura J. on January 7, 2011 at 11:49 am

I love that you’re doing WMOW videos- such a fun additional to the bloggy. Bella is adorable! She reminds me of my kids when I try to work out at home- they crawl all over me like a jungle gym- planks with a 2 year old on your back is another great variation is anyone is interested 😉 Thanks for the video Gina, it was great! 🙂

  49. Jessica on January 7, 2011 at 12:19 pm

Hi Gina! I posted my Inspiration Board, please check it out on my blog when you can! Thanks!

Like all your other followers I would luv a VITA MIX. My blender is ok but cannot stand up to what a VITA MIX can. I am already following you on open sky.

Bella bugging you during exercise is great practice for kids. My 3yo crawls in and out of my body parts while I am doing yoga. Never mind the whole meditative aspect of yoga – haven’t had that experience in a while!
