Monday Rundays

I was so excited to write this post saying that I conquered my 10-miler this morning.

Alas, was not the case.

(I’m pretty convinced that 10 miles = my distance nemesis)

I didn’t get home too late last night -had a blast with the girls, though- and was going to wake up super early to get in my run before the family woke up. Well, I did the thing where I basically tossed and turned all night, just because I knew I had to wake up early. (Does anyone else do this?!) When my alarm went off, I was already awake. I thought about all of my running clothes sitting downstairs waiting for me, my refreshed playlist, and then set my alarm for another 40 minutes and snuggled back up in bed.

Instead, I ended up going to the gym to get in some cardio to start the day. Not 10 miles, but just what I was in the mood for. I did my current favorite HIIT and Steady workout (30-30s on the treadmill for 25 minutes and 20 minutes steady on the Stairmaster). It was also nice to catch up on the news during my treadmill intervals and read tabloid literature on the Stairmaster. Not too shabby ;)

When I got home, it was perfect time to make breakfast and eat with Oliv, and then I emptied out my Camelbak that I’d put in the fridge last night.

Camelbak

Camelbak pros, please let me know what you do to keep the reservoir part clean. I’ll empty mine out, rinse with soapy water and dry with a cloth, but there is ALWAYS still a little water in the tube. My last reservoir ended up in the trash can because I had left water with Heed powder inside of it for like… a week… and could not get the fake orange flavor out of it to save my life. It was pretty gnarly. If you have any tips, I’d love to hear them!

I’m still hyped up from last night’s Zumbathon and getting the chance to dance with Eric Aglia and his family. Fellow ZIN instructors, stay tuned for the next ZIN because he’s on there (meaning the choreography will be good). He teaches with his wife and kids in Cottonwood AZ- his kids can move better than I can.

This morning, we’re just hanging out and going to grab some Thanksgviving ingredients for Thursday night’s dessert party. I picked up some cranberries at Whole Foods on the way to the Zumbathon, along with some dinner and persimmons – I love them so much.

Persimmons

Also, a little treat for later.

Kombucha 2

Chia kombucha! They should have just attached a string of dental floss to the bottle.

Hope you have a wonderful day and I’ll see ya later on the Fashion page.

xoxo

Gina

Question – What shoes do you wear and recommend for zumba?? I always just wear my old running shoes (not enough cushion in to run anymore but still in okay shape) but they aren’t great for lateral movement and are a little too “grippy” for some of the shuffle/slide moves.

I’m hoping to snag a Black Friday deal at a sporting goods store!!

Yes, vinegar all the way! The acidity staves off mold growth. And I can’t say this for bleach, but with vinegar you can rest easy you won’t ingest a small amount of chemical cleaning product if any is left over by your next use.

After cleaning it try blowing into the tubing (using the mouthpiece) to get the water out! Works for me!

Hi Gina – I actually use denture cleaner in my camelbak reservoir. You can get a box of the stuff pretty cheap at Target. Its a little disk of cleaner that you pop in the reservoir with water and let it disolve. I let it sit for a bit, then drain it out through the line instead of the fill port and then rinse the whole thing 3 or 4 times with straight water. I dry it off as best I can, then hang it upside down with the cap off overnight (or until I get around to using it again, or it drives my husband nuts and he puts it away). It even got the grape gatorade flavor out of my camelbak after I ran the Ragnar (and it wasn’t even rinsed for 3 days).

For the camelback, hang the reservoir on an old bent wire hanger to dry it out (just stretch the hanger into a diamond). For the tube, hold one end and whip the other around in a circle really fast; it should make a whizzing sound and spray any excess water out – you may want to do that part outside!

I can totally relate to tossing and turning all night when I need to get up early the next day. Its the worst. Then again I am not a morning person at all so I generally have trouble falling asleep early normally.

I believe that distance running is more harmful to a body than helpful, based on several books I’ve read. Think about in human evolution how there has never been a time when people naturally did it. We ran from predators or to hunt but that’s more of sprints and stops, not mile upon mile. I think we’re not built for it. Which is probably why it’s so dread-inducing. It’d be like making Bella swim laps. ; )

Whenever I know I have to get up early, I am awake all night. Or I have panic filled dreams where I didn’t hear the alarm go off and now everything’s gone to hell hahaha. Last night I knew I had to get up at 5.30 (and I normally get up at maybe 11am) so I took a wee sleeping pill att 9pm and was WIDE AWAKE again by midnight and didn’t sleep again until 3am. And even then I woke up at least five times. Terribly tiring. And it shall be repeated for the next week and a half until I can get back to my regular snoozing routine.

I love the HIIT and Steady cardio workout, I’ve sort of been in a running slump but have managed to do it at least once a week and the time seriously flies by!

Good for you for listening to your body and sleeping instead of running!

I totally toss and turn all night whenever I know I have an early or a really long day ahead of me. Glad to know I’m not the only one (though sad that you also go through it).

Although I’d have to dust an inch thick layer of dust off my camelbak right now (haha) I usually throw it in the freezer to take care of the leftover water problem. Worked for me! :)

I always toss and turn if I know I have to get up early, especially if I have a run that morning! In fact, I’m nervous that will be this Saturday’s night sleep before my half marathon. Oy!

For the Camelbak reservoir – I use vinegar and water and it seems to work pretty well. I’ve also used Listerine upon recommendation and that worked too, as weird as that sounds!

Sad news – I’ve found that the tossing, turning and being awake more than asleep at night gets worse every year.
After cleaning my camelback I store it with just a little water in it in the freezer – I’ve convinced myself this will help keep it less germy!!!

I am infamous for planning a workout and then waking up and completely changing it! You just have to go with what feels right!…doing what you love are the times that you get the most out of your workout!

My first suggestion as far as the camelbak, is stick to just water in them, and use water bottles for sport drinks and all that. Mold is not as much of an issue if you’re only drinking water out of it, and it doesn’t have to be washed out/dried all the time. Also, I think soap is a no-no is Camelbaks, but they could give you all the details on right on their website.

Your attitude is great though – sometimes if my exact fitness plan derails itself I just give up completely, so to go to a different workout and still get some good cardio in was excellent. Hope you beat that 10 mile block!

LOL -> “Chia kombucha! They should have just attached a string of dental floss to the bottle.” Gina, this cracked me up! BTW, I keep floss (and chapstick) in every purse/bag I use just because I feel like there’s been plenty of times I need it at the worst possible time when I can’t get to it.

I’m wondering what Camelbak you have. I’m looking for another option since my water belt is not working so well and I don’t like carrying a water bottle in my hand. I’m hoping to get a small Camelbak for running long-ish distances.
    Thanks!
