August 9: Tabata Thursday

Not much in the land of new healthy food ideas over here. I’ve been enjoying eggs aplenty and abusing the bag of steamed lentils from Trader Joe’s that I found in the fridge. Makes for some pretty unappetizing food photos ๐Ÿ˜‰

I do have a hot bar record for ya, though:ย

Whole foods

$5.99!

Ka-boom. (My record high was around $20 after a half marathon. Whole Foods sprinkles gold in their pre-made delights)

Our hot bars here in Tucson are pretty sad (not complaining because I’m just happy to live near a Whole Foods), but it’s always a special treat to check out the hot bars in other cities. The above gem is from Las Vegas, and included balsamic beets, kale salad, quinoa salad, roasted garlic and hummus. Jeni laughed at my snack- despite the price, it was size-able- especially when the plan was to eat half and save the rest for later. I think we all know how that worked out.

This awesome basket my friend Lisa left for us in the locker room, filled with Australian treats:

Australian goodies

Tim Tams are the key to my heart. SO GOOD.

I also have a Tabata video for you.

Tabata thursday

I hope you’ve been enjoying them as much as I like making them. This week’s is a BOOTY BURNER- lots and lots of squats!ย

Some things to remember:

-Always sandwich a Tabata Thursday in between a proper warmup and cool down. Choose any cardio you like, but make sure your muscles are nice and warm before getting into any plyometrics or high intensity movements. You can repeat the video for a total of 3 Tabata rounds, if you’d like.

-Honor your body by modifying as necessary to accommodate your needs or injuries. Check with a doc before making any fitness changes.

-Do not do high-intensity interval training on consecutive days. Intense intervals challenge our heart to its maximum capacity- the heart is a muscle and needs rest, too. We get stronger through rest, not work, and overtraining has the opposite effect of what we’d like it to do.ย

-I stopped trying to add music, and even though it’s awkward to listen to my breathing (at least I’m huffing and puffing along with you, eh?), the timer is easy to hear and you can blast any music you like. What’s your current power song??

-For more details on Tabata training, check out this post, and for ways to incorporate it into your schedule, check out the August workout calendar.

-After you try the workout, please leave a comment to let me know how it goes, or Instagram/tweet your sweaty picture @fitnessista #tabatathursday

Happy sweating!ย

xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about:ย Do you have any food splurges? Mine are goat cheese, coconut water, almond butter, and the occasional hot bar. I love it so much.

Something to think:

Wherever you are right now, you are not stuck. Your heart will tell you if you’re unhappy or need to make a change- you just have to listen.

I love overpriced beer; because, it apparently takes 200 hipsters and as many dollars to get me tipsy.

  2. Michelle @ Eat Move Balance on August 9, 2012 at 10:14 am

The hot bar at Whole Foods is AMAZING! Definitely something I look forward to and then splurge on it.

Thank you for another tabata workout video. I’m loving them!

  3. Sarabell on August 9, 2012 at 10:27 am

I’m going to have to try out a hot bar next time I’m near a Whole Foods. They always sound so great!

    • Sarabell on August 9, 2012 at 10:28 am

Actually, considering that I’m currently a full-time traveler, it’d be kind of a crime not to. I definitely need to try them out in all the different cities I see for the rest of the summer.

Thank you for this quote – it’s exactly what I needed to hear right now!

PS I am loving the Tabata Thursday workouts! ๐Ÿ™‚

I love/hate squat jacks! Thanks for sharing the workout with us.

  6. Nicole on August 9, 2012 at 10:28 am

have had brutal internet until the last couple of months and i’m so sad that i’m just catching your videos now!! you’re awesome like “on screen” or whatever you want to call it!!!!!!

  7. Julia on August 9, 2012 at 10:32 am

Gosh, Gina! Thanks for the quote and your words.
    “…you just have to listen.”
That is exactly what I need to remind myself of these days.
With a bachelor’s degree almost completed, I have absolutely no clue what to do with my life…

    I guess that explains why I’ve booked a flight to Australia… ๐Ÿ™‚
Chill out there and see where life (and maybe love) takes me.

Ooh have you ever tried a Tim Tam Slam? It’s where you bite off the opposite corners of the Tim Tam (like the top right and the bottom left), then dip the bottom one into a mug of hot chocolate or coffee. Slurp from the top hole just a little bit until you feel it hit your mouth. The hot chocolate/coffee comes up and melts the chocolate, so you flip the Tim Tam around and shove the whole thing in your mouth bottom-end first. It’s like Christmas for your tastebuds!

    • Heather on August 10, 2012 at 12:27 am

Thank you for reminding me of this! My host family in Australia taught me that!!

  9. Danielle@cleanfoodcreativefitness on August 9, 2012 at 10:42 am

Love tabata! I’ve actually never had whole foods hot bar and I’m kind of afraid to try it because I think I might become addicted!!!

  10. Dana on August 9, 2012 at 10:43 am

Is the interval timer on your watch or something else ? Thanks!

  11. Rachel on August 9, 2012 at 10:43 am

I’ve never tried the bars at Whole Foods.. I’ll have to check that out on my next visit

  12. Mallory on August 9, 2012 at 10:45 am

My food spluges are: almond butter (sooo expensive here in Nova Scotia and VERY hard to find), Feta cheese (I could seriously put this on everything) and fancy schmancy coffee.

    • Erin on August 9, 2012 at 7:26 pm

Mallory- I am from Nova Scotia too! Costco is the way to go for almond butter ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Lizzie on August 9, 2012 at 10:51 am

That wears me out just watching!

  14. Kristin on August 9, 2012 at 10:54 am

Gina, that is an amazing quote! I feel like you are reading my mind with that one. I’m trying to figure out what makes me happy and what changes to make in life in order to be happy. Thank you!

  15. Alex @ Raw Recovery on August 9, 2012 at 10:57 am

I lived in Oz for a short time in high school and Tim Tams are THE BEST! I used to get Tim Tam smoothies and they were the most delicious, refreshing thing in the heat of the summer ๐Ÿ™‚ If you ever get a chance to try the mint or caramel ones, I highly recommend it ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. carrie on August 9, 2012 at 11:14 am

Thanks for the video, but would you consider also jotting down the routine for those of us who can’t watch them at work? I workout on lunch, and love to check in and grab the workout before I go. It would be greatly appreciated!

  17. Jen on August 9, 2012 at 11:15 am

Great quote at the end of the post. My boyfriend and I just broke up so I’m going through a lot of the ups and downs that go with it. Have a super day!

  18. Stefanie @TheNewHealthy on August 9, 2012 at 11:17 am

I love checking out new hot bars! And I get all too excited when I find one with stellar line up of WF goodness. ๐Ÿ™‚ Can’t wait to try that tabata workout later!

  19. Brittany on August 9, 2012 at 11:31 am

I love Tabata Thursday. but I end up doing them when I really dont want to go to the gym but want to get a workout in. I am going away today for the weekend and I really want to try to do this in the hotel room given that the room is big enough. Last year when I went on this trip it was me, my parents and my brother. 4 people in one room with only a kind size bed made the room way too small. It was hard to move in there let alone do a workout in!

  20. Averie @ Averie Cooks on August 9, 2012 at 11:33 am

good job on the $5.99 hot bar – not sure if they’re beets but they are gorgeous whatever they are!

  21. marty on August 9, 2012 at 11:36 am

Whenever we travel we always map our trip around having lunch at Whole Foods, so much better than going to McDonalds or searching for places to eat blindly.
Would you mind telling me how many hours of exercise you do a week? I’m trying to lose weight and I do about 4 hours a week.

    Thanks Marty

  22. Paige @ Your Trainer Paige on August 9, 2012 at 11:43 am

I wish I had a WF closer than 2 hours away!
I have been hearing about Tim Tams so much recently – kinda random, but I’ve never tried one before.

  23. lisa on August 9, 2012 at 11:45 am

Did she teach you the proper way to do a tim-tam slam? This has become our campfire tradition. Check it out on youtube if not, it is the only way to enjoy tim-tams!

  24. Staci on August 9, 2012 at 11:53 am

LOVE goat cheese, I recently picked some up from the farmer’s market (which was way too expensive, but had to do it anyway) and the two flavors were Garlic & onion, and Apricot & Honey…WOW, party in my mouth LOL

  25. Hayley @ Running on Pumpkin on August 9, 2012 at 11:56 am

Thank you for leaving the video – I love to try out workouts I find online, but sometimes when they are just written down I don’t know if I’m doing them right! I will definitely be trying this in the next couple days ๐Ÿ™‚ My food splurges are deli sandwiches. I can make a sandwich any day at home for super cheap, but I have a couple favorite delis that are ridiculously expensive but way too good to give up going to once in a while. Something about having someone else make your sandwich for you…

  26. Allyson Moody on August 9, 2012 at 12:02 pm

Love this Tabata workout. Thanks for the motivation:)

  27. Christina on August 9, 2012 at 12:12 pm

I LOVE the tabata workout! I do tabatas once or twice during the week and your videos have given me so many new options to incorporate, thanks so much!

  28. mary on August 9, 2012 at 12:25 pm

$6 and it doesn’t even cover the bottom of the box? LOL! I’m such a cheapskate, I never go to WF. I see where it gets Whole Paycheck from!

  29. Alook Training on August 9, 2012 at 12:38 pm

Was just reading your food splurges- almond butter is amazing- and a great source of protein and healthy fats! Have you ever tried it paired with a banana? Great combo :).

  30. Hannah on August 9, 2012 at 12:43 pm

Thank you so much for working on these Tabata work outs, Gina! I have been loving all of them… did 3 of yours yesterday! Looking forward to trying this one tomorrow ๐Ÿ™‚

I totally LOVE almond butter too. I actually made my own last weekend and as of today, it’s already gone. GONE!

  31. *Andrea* on August 9, 2012 at 12:49 pm

great quote! something i need to remind myself more.

i had WF salad bar last night, thought i did well on price because i didn’t have any heavy meats or pastas (only roasted veggies, salads, tofus) and it was still $10.50. ugh! sooo yummy though ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on August 9, 2012 at 1:47 pm

My WF hot bar lunches always average around $14… I wish I could make them cheaper, but I always get way too excited about all the options! ๐Ÿ˜›

My splurges are good quality olive oil & balsamic vinegar, soy nut butter, sharp cheddar cheese, and Greek yogurt.

  33. Beverly Aragon on August 9, 2012 at 2:01 pm

My food splurges are very similar to yours – high quality cheeses and chocolates, nuts and nut butters, coconut water and oil. It’s funny though…I didn’t really consider these items splurges! I guess I’m more practical about not spending $$ on other items I really don’t need so that I’m able to purchase these items regularly.

  34. Liz @ Southern Charm on August 9, 2012 at 2:14 pm

I love the cold bar at WF. Its when I allow myself blue cheese dressing over my kale. YUM!!

  35. CourtStar @ StarSystemz on August 9, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Hot bar food! I have not heard of that! Sounds so fun, I love creating food with already made up food! I am huge on letting people rest because if you skip the rest part you overtrain which can lead to injury which in turn leads to no more working out! Love your blog! Love and Shine CourtStar

  36. Sam @ Better With Sprinkles on August 9, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Definitely with you on the goat cheese splurge…goat cheese is amazing.

Also chocolate, fancy snacks and coconut oil are on that list.

  37. Julie on August 9, 2012 at 3:09 pm

I love the picture she drew of Australia!

  38. Caralyn @ glutenfreehappytummy on August 9, 2012 at 3:19 pm

oh yes, the whole foods hot bar! they must use gold dust in their ingredients:) not complaining though – it’s always delicious! and what an AWESOME shot of you mid-jump! woo!

  39. Eileen on August 9, 2012 at 4:02 pm

Gina, I love your workouts! Just did the tabata for an afternoon pick me up. I have been mixing in your latest week 1-4 circuits into my workouts and truly enjoy them. Any plans for more circuits? Your workouts have always been good, but lately you seem to be taking them to the next level. Love that they are short and intense because I don’t have time to do more than 30-45 min. each morning. Thanks for the work you put into these!!

  40. Lisa on August 9, 2012 at 4:08 pm

Splurges for me are any nut butter (artisana is my favourite), sun warrior, coconut oil, and goat cheese.

  41. Eva @ Committed2Nutrition on August 9, 2012 at 4:28 pm

Love this post and especially the last saying – we are not stuck. So have needed that advice TOO many times in my life ๐Ÿ˜‰ I LOVE whole foods foor bad… it’s so addicting, but so $, unfortunately. My food splurges are really just the, i dunno, FOUR PLUS TIMES per week I go to the grocery store and buy things I don’t really need but WANT! ha!

  42. Melodie on August 9, 2012 at 4:29 pm

love the tabata workouts! but i needed something quick yesterday, so i made up my own tabata, stealing lots of your moves from your previous tabata videos. so no tabata for me today.

off subject a little, but tomorrow i’m headed to Trader Joe’s for the first time ever! we have a new one that just opened in town. i just wish it was on my side of town. anyways, any must haves that i should buy when i go? or tell me some of your favorite things. thanks!

  43. Sarah @ SoYouLikeMermaids on August 9, 2012 at 5:09 pm

Yay Tim Tams!! I’m from Australia and sometimes I forget how awesome they are, and how much the rest of the world misses out ๐Ÿ™‚

Let me know next time you want more and we can see how they go in long-distance shipping…perhaps we could do a swap for Reeses pieces? I miss those little delights…

  44. Kelli Preston on August 9, 2012 at 5:22 pm

So excited to try this workout. I am always on the prowl for a new workout. My favorite power song right now is Gonna Get Over you by Sara Bareilles. Not your typical booty movin’ song, but a good one nonetheless.

  45. Michaela on August 9, 2012 at 6:57 pm

I am SUCH a fan of Tabata Thursday, I really hope it never ends! I just love Tabata workouts, they are perfect when I am super busy and have only about 20 min. They leave me feeling that I have actually done something!
I splurge on organic tofu, and sometimes organic berries if I feel like it (they are SO expensive where I live).

  46. Katie on August 9, 2012 at 7:11 pm

My mom lives in Australia (I’m in Wisconsin), and Tim Tams are the best!

  47. Anne on August 9, 2012 at 8:15 pm

The Whole Foods bar legit makes me giddy with delight. Fro yo is also a food splurge U undulge WAY too often!

  48. kim@hungryhealthygirl on August 9, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Biggest food splurge is any kind of nutbutter and a big bowl of froyo!

  49. Mary on August 9, 2012 at 9:13 pm

As a poor grad student all my food feels like a splurge, ha! Favorite splurges are G.T.’s Kombucha, organic dark chocolate (Green&Black’s, Theo), Eat Pastry vegan cookie dough, and Probars (best quick on the go breakfast EVER).

  50. Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy on August 9, 2012 at 10:09 pm

That workout looks tough! I’ll have to try it!
